Scriptural Reflections for Organ. Composed by Roberta Rowland-Raybold. Sacred. Organ. 28 pages. Lorenz Publishing - Digital Sheet Music #e70/2378L. Published by Lorenz Publishing - Digital Sheet Music (LX.70-2378L).

After the success of The Beatitudes (70/2144L), Roberta Rowland-Raybold has returned to scripture with a set of organ pieces inspired by the Fruit of the Spirit from the book of Galatians. Each fruit has inspired an organ piece based on a traditional hymn with a thematic link. The organ pieces can certainly serve as individual voluntaries, though the complete group can also be used for a recital or special church service--proving especially effective if paired with readings, prayers, or poetry.

Poème symphonique. Composed by Robert M. Helmschrott. This edition: Sheet music. Downloadable. Duration 32 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q19995. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q19995).

Used as a place of worship for centuries, first by Christians and then by Muslims (from 1453), the Hagia Sophia (Istanbul) still amazes people from all over the world. Since 1934, it is a museum – but more than that, the Hagia Sophia, a unique architectural work of monumental proportions in Christian Antiquity and the Middle Ages, is described as a mystical place. Monumental, yet mysterious, a 'miracle of space', a symbol, a sign. 'Sophia', the holy wisdom, accompanies us through the whole Bible history. The present music has to be regarded against this background: A reflection, contemplation with music and poetry. The Creation is powerful, but the truth about it is powerful as well. And the realization that the path to truth is reached through wisdom. As a consequence, this piece has to cross the powerful for half its duration, monumental. It is the cupola over all following (observing) verses (sections). From bar 371, the path leads back into the powerful, into the rejoicing (bar 406). It must not be forgotten to mention the suggestion of 'singing in a mosque' (bar 510) which is answered by a simple prayer (bar 511). This is reminiscent of the mosaic above the imperial door of the building portraying Jesus Christ sitting on a jewelled throne. He holds an open book in which one can read 'Peace be with you. I am the light of the world'. The line and sound of Hagia Sophia are based on a symmetrical eight-note row (mode B) with the notes B, C sharp, D, E/F, G, A flat (G sharp), B flat (A sharp). Although the major-minor relations are removed, harmonic connections (colours) emerge nevertheless.

By Dr. Sheri L. Masiakowski. By Sr. Theophane Hytrek OSF. Arranged by Dr. Sheri L. Masiakowski. 20th Century,Religious,Sacred. Score. 7 pages. School Sisters of St. Francis #989483. Published by School Sisters of St. Francis (A0.1406728).

“The Spirit of the Lord† Sr. Theophane Hytrek OSF

Dedicated to Robert Verwoert on the occasion of his ordination to the priesthood — May 1971

Sr. Theophane Hytrek OSF earned her PhD in composition from the University of Rochester (Eastman School of Music) in 1955.  She is known for a variety of compositional genres, e.g. keyboard (organ and piano), voice, and orchestra. Compositions for voice include masses, responses, psalm settings, hymns for congregation, choral music and solos.

TEXT:
The Spirit of the Lord is upon us.
Send your Spirit upon us in this time and place, the Spirit who gives us comfort, the Spirit who brings light to our eyes, the Spirit who helps us say yes to your summoning Word.
Bless us, Father, as you have done before, with the gift of your Spirit that he may stir new life within us.
Blest are you in ev'rything that your Spirit makes new, now and for all ages to come.

The source of this text is unknown. Though appropriate for Pentecost there is no direct connection to the scripture readings or sacramentary prayers for that Feast. The composition was written in the early years succeeding Vatican II (October 11, 1962 – December 8, 1965), a time of creative freedom. The language is period specific to that time, yet the music is universal.

Rehearsal recommendation:

The verse text is notated in consistent eighth-notes. Do not interpret this to mean that all syllables are to receive equal time.  Speak the text in natural cadence and then sing the pitches in that same natural cadence.  This will best represent Sr. Theophane’s intention.
