By Dr. Sheri Masiakowski. By Sr. Mary Hueller OSF (Sr. Maurelia Hueller OSF). Arranged by Dr. Sheri Masiakowski. 20th Century,Sacred. Full Performance. Duration 165. School Sisters of St. Francis #977269. Published by School Sisters of St. Francis (A0.1393797).

Sister Mary Hueller (1921-2017), DMA from the Eastman School of Music, colleague of Sr. Theophane Hytrek OSF, was professor of organ, piano, and liturgical music at Alverno College (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) throughout her professional career. At various times Sister Mary chaired the Fine Arts Division, coordinated the Music Department, and served on many college committees. After Sr. Theophane Hytrek's passing in 1992, Sr. Mary succeeded her as organist at St. Joseph Chapel for several decades. “Tribute†was written in response to Sr. Theophane Hytrek’s choral compostion “Canticle of the Creatures†(SSAA) sung by the School Sisters of St. Francis choirs regularly for community celebrations since it was written in 1949. The choral composition will soon be published in both SSAA and SATB arrangements. “Tribute†is of intermediate difficulty but has a challenging pedal part. At the time of composition Sr. Mary had learned to use Finale software and engraved the original score herself. This editor enjoyed spending time with Sr. Mary once a week as tutor while she developed this skill. Unfortunately the original computer file is no longer available and extant copies are not of sufficient quality to publish. Dr. Masiakowski produced the following edition based on Sr. Mary’s score. Fingering and pedal suggestions are those of Sr. Mary Hueller. “The Spirit of the Lord† Sr. Theophane Hytrek OSF

Dedicated to Robert Verwoert on the occasion of his ordination to the priesthood — May 1971

Sr. Theophane Hytrek OSF earned her PhD in composition from the University of Rochester (Eastman School of Music) in 1955.  She is known for a variety of compositional genres, e.g. keyboard (organ and piano), voice, and orchestra. Compositions for voice include masses, responses, psalm settings, hymns for congregation, choral music and solos.

TEXT:
The Spirit of the Lord is upon us.
Send your Spirit upon us in this time and place, the Spirit who gives us comfort, the Spirit who brings light to our eyes, the Spirit who helps us say yes to your summoning Word.
Bless us, Father, as you have done before, with the gift of your Spirit that he may stir new life within us.
Blest are you in ev'rything that your Spirit makes new, now and for all ages to come.

The source of this text is unknown. Though appropriate for Pentecost there is no direct connection to the scripture readings or sacramentary prayers for that Feast. The composition was written in the early years succeeding Vatican II (October 11, 1962 – December 8, 1965), a time of creative freedom. The language is period specific to that time, yet the music is universal.

Rehearsal recommendation:

The verse text is notated in consistent eighth-notes. Do not interpret this to mean that all syllables are to receive equal time.  Speak the text in natural cadence and then sing the pitches in that same natural cadence.  This will best represent Sr. Theophane’s intention.

A set of variations based on “Immaculate Maryâ€, a hymn for feast days of Mary, is well-loved and found in many hymnals.
The tune attribution is a traditional Pyrenean melody published in Grenoble—1882.
Sr. Theophane’s undated manuscript  suggests a composition date of c. 1950-1960 confirmed by suggested registrations from the former Schaefer organ in St. Joseph Chapel (Milwaukee, Wisconsin).  More of Sr. Theophane's compositions as well as those of her Sister colleagues can be found at sssf.org -- Music Catalog.

SKU: A0.1453797

By Dr. Sheri L. Masiakowski. By Sr. Theophane Hytrek OSF (Sr. Mary Theophane OSF). Arranged by Dr. Sheri L. Masiakowski. 20th Century,March,Sacred,Traditional,Wedding. Full Performance. Duration 400. School Sisters of St. Francis #1033047. Published by School Sisters of St. Francis (A0.1453797).

Intermediate difficulty.
Originally published in 1956 for weddings these marches serve any occasion. The opening composition, “Marche Nuptiale,” may be played as a complete unit through m. 53.

If played as a wedding march, there is a complete change of character in ms. 54-71. At this point it introduces the Latin Introit—Mode III of the Nuptiale Mass found in the Graduale Romanum:  Deus Israel conjungat vos, et ipse sit vobiscum, qui misertus est duobus unicis: et nunc, Domine, fac eos plenius benedicere te.  P.T. Alleluia, alleluia.  Ps. Beati omnes qui timent Dominum: qui ambulant in viis ejus.*  This section may also be played independently while the couple approaches the altar as an introduction to the sung introit.

*“May the God of Israel join you together; and may he be with you, who took pity upon two only children: and now, O Lord, make them bless thee more fully.  Ps. 127:1  Blessed are all they that fear the Lord; that walk in his ways.”

* * *
The Recessional, an A B A form, serves any Sunday as a postlude or a practical extension after the main recessional at a wedding (key of G with frequent flat 6-Eb). The B section begins with the pick-up to m. 28, a practical extension when repeated with its succeeding A section to lengthen the composition.

Sr. Theophane presents the pair for use on a two-manual instrument. The dynamics provide an easy conversion for a three-manual performance.
