For many years I have enjoyed playing the simpler manualiter chorale preludes of Zachau and J. G. Walter in the old Peters edition many organists will be familiar with. Then there are the delightful little preludes of Ernst Pepping which I first heard as a teenager in a recording by E. Power Biggs. I had something of a cross between these two influences in mind for this new set of English preludes. There are some finger-twisting moments here and there, but by and large these manuals-only pieces are meant to be shorter, more direct, and simpler (in concept, if not execution!) than my larger sets of preludes. The hymns dealt with here represent a useful mix of liturgical purposes and include Holy, Holy, Holy!, Come, Thou Almighty King, When Morning Gilds the Skies, Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates, All Things Bright and Beautiful, Beneath the Cross of Jesus, The Church’s One Foundation, and Christ the Lord is Risen Today. As always, sources and timings are included and the score prints in landscape format.

These settings were suggested by and written for Dr. Joan DeVee Dixon, Professor of Music at Frostburg State University in Frostburg, Maryland. The work was commissioned by Dr. Alvin C Broyles, retired senior research associate of Exxon Production Research Company. This Prelude on the Christmas carol tune Christmas Song (There's a Song in the Air) is the first of two settings I have created based on this tune.  This setting requires only a two-manual organ and is of moderate difficulty.  Structurally, the piece begins with an introduction that makes use of the dotted eighth/sixteenth rhythm that pervades the tune itself.  A fresh harmonization of the first two phrases of the tune follows.  They are succeeded in turn by an interlude similar to the introduction.  A harmonization of the third and fourth phrases of the tune is then presented.  A shorter interlude leads to a varied restatement of the last phrase, itself followed by a brief postlude, again employing the aforementioned dotted rhythm.  I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process.  I encourage you to search he Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

My Partita on Sweet Hour (Sweet Hour of Prayer) presents the theme with an original 4-part harmonization followed by five variations.  The first variation is a duo in which the tune is set against a continuous stream of sixteenth notes as accompaniment.  The second variation is a waltz in the key of F-sharp major in which an ornamented and expanded version of the melody is accompanied by a modified um-pah-pah accompaniment played by the feet and left hand.  By contrast, variation three, in the key of B minor, moves at a much slower pace and conveys a rather sombre mood.  The next variation set in 5/8 meter is somewhat like a scherzo.  Each phrase of the melody is in a different key and has modal inflections that lends it a mildly exotic character  The fifth and final variation is a toccata in the French style that requires panache and bravura.  The tune is intoned in slow moving rhythm by the feet while the hands provide a rapidly moving sextuplet accompaniment.  I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process.  I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.
