The language is period specific to that time, yet the music is universal.Rehearsal recommendation:The verse text is notated in consistent eighth-notes. Sr. Presentia Steffen OSF (1916-2000), colleague of Sr. Theophane Hytrek OSF, composed this simple organ piece on the Midnight Mass Gregorian Chant Communion antiphon. Its text is: In splendoribus sanctorum, ex utero, ante luciferum, genui te; in English, “Amidst the splendours of the heavenly sanctuary, from the womb, before the morning star, I have begotten you.� The manuscript is not dated but was likely created before 1950.  Sr. Presentia succeeded Sr. Theophane Hytrek OSF as St. Joseph Convent Chapel organist from 1953 until she suffered a stroke which paralyzed her left side in 1964.  Further information is available from Heritage Music Series editor -- Dr. Sheri L. An air and four contrasting variations on ’Brother James’ Air’, a hymn tune composed by James Leith Bain, who was a Scottish minister at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century and known as Brother James. The first three variations are in the style of John Stanley, the fourth variation is a two part canon. Although the suggested stop registration is for three manuals and is only a guide. All movements only require a small number of light stops and therefore can very effectively be played on a small two manual instrument.

My Prelude on the Christmas carol tune Mendelssohn (Hark! the Herald Angels Sing) opens with a brief introduction based on the first measure of the third phrase of the tune.  An original harmonization of the entire tune follows, anchored by a repetitive rhythmic pattern of alternating rests and chords.  An interlude ensues, which is a rhythmically intensified reworking of the initial introduction.  Then the first phrase of the tune sounds in a new key in the pedal bass, accompanied by parallel triads in the hands.  Another interlude follows, also based on parallel triads, and leading to a statement in the pedals of the second phrase of the tune.  Slightly modified versions of the third and fourth phrases with varied accompaniments lead to a strong cadence.  The final section follows, beginning with an extended introduction that increases the rhythmic pace to the point where a constant stream of rapidly moving sixteenth notes drives forward to the final statement of the carol tune, and lends a sense of urgency as the flow continues underneath the melody.  The tempo slows slightly during a brief postlude in which the state trumpet reiterates a rhythmic pattern heard earlier.  I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process.  I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

This arrangement of the hymn tune St. Agnes (Jesus, the Very Thought of Thee) is a relatively simple setting that requires only a two-manual organ and modest playing ability.  A 12-bar introduction sets the mood.  Each phrase of the tune then appears, each separated from the next by a brief interlude.  Just as the piece seems to reach its conclusion, the final cadence is evaded and a second rendition of the melody is heard in another key.  I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process.  I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

This stately canon is perfect for any festive occasion where there is a pipe organ, but it was specifically written as part of the Medieval Wedding Suite to dovetail with the Agincourt Hymn by Dunstable.  Beginning with a simple statement of the original motive on which is was based, it crescendos to a cinematic full-chord ending.  It would work well for both the wedding party and bride.  Check my composer page for the other pieces to this Medieval-based set of works for weddings!  I wrote them with the couple in mind who love everything fantasy, Renaissance Fair, or cosplay.
