Whether the need is to cover the sound of shuffling feet as latecomers are seated or simply to establish a contemplative ambience, organists will find many uses for these short interludes in all keys. While some organ registrations and dynamic levels are suggested, the organist is advised to select stops that best suit the immediate moment of use. The majority of interludes in the service call for Flute or string celestas and other soft stops. A few of these pieces also present possibilities for using fuller or brighter combinations. These eight Chorale Preludes were all written between March and May of 2020, during the worldwide Coronavirus Pandemic. Unlike the earlier companion volumes of shorter English and German preludes, which feature a variety of moods and themes, these American examples all seem to center around the closely related ideas of hope and quiet confidence. While this was not my intention back when I was choosing hymns to work with, I am pleased with the unity of the set. Taken as a whole, they are filled with tidings of comfort and joy. Stylistically, the preludes range from the baroque bounce of Praise Him, Jesus Our Blessed Redeemer, through the sturdy On Christ the Solid Rock I Stand (with its chords sounding as if they had been carved from granite blocks) and a surprisingly delicate I Stand Amazed. There is a fair amount of canonic leading and following in He Leadeth Me; Great is Thy Faithfulness is the expressive heart of the set; and we end by returning to 18th century ritornello models with Blessed Assurance. Through it all I think I have managed to avoid any sense of academic stuffiness - in fact there are several moments which may sound almost playful if not handled rightly.As with the Shorter English and German Preludes, most of these are between one and two minutes in length, and each fits on one or two pages, arranged so as to avoid page turns. Born and raised in Cyprus, an isolated Mediterranean island-state in Europe where the religious musical tradition (Greek Orthodox Christianity) relies solely on voices (no instruments used during services), I never had access to an Organ. In fact, to the best of my knowledge, there’s not a single Organ in my entire country. The first time I ever saw one was during my college years in New York – and it was love at first sight! I was fascinated by its sound capabilities, its mechanism, and the sheer skill required to play it. You can, therefore, understand how thrilled I am to have had the opportunity to write for this great instrument. I would like to sincerely thank Shannon Murphy and Austin Philemon for believing in my work, and for commissioning this piece. Both the Toccata and the Fugue are based on the same (but altered) motivic materials. The Toccata is a piece that was inspired by the idea that life is a continuous marathon, represented by the ‘mechanical’ sixteenth-note ostinato figure which never stops – despite the contrapuntal obstacles that are thrown within its path. The motive, however, does transform and adapt along the way, in order to make the best of the situation.  The Fugue, on the other hand, represents the cerebral aspect of life: the concept of choices. The ostinato motive of the Toccata has now morphed into the subject of the Fugue, which will be attacked by some violent chromatic enemies. This 3.75 minute arrangement first states the first line of the hymn a few times then continues so when the line reaches the end of the phrase and holds, the material giving the rest to what the ear hears as the resting spots of the melodic statement finds the melody restated to provide the ear its resting, resulting in a constant infusion thus, a litany. Using the voix celeste, this is a very well received writing.  It happens the day after I finished this my mother passed.  I have used this as prelude and offertory.  Good for students needing help with learning legato.  A favorite of my congregation, I always am thanked by someone each time it is presented for having played it.  Good instruction for providing easy pedal part that slowly spans from Eb1 to F3 then back to Eb1 by step progression.  Tune name:  Slane.
