Composed by Thomas R. Schadl. 20th Century,Concert,Contemporary,Instructional,Standards. Score. 17 pages. Thomas R. Schadl #5303799. Published by Thomas R. Schadl (A0.912504).

The Finale from Sonata In C For Organ is suitable for recital use, and may be used for teaching students on techniques of incorporating thematic materials from other movements or other works to their compositions.

This last movement opens with a slow and quiet registration, depicting an anticipation of some good event to come. One may associate this section (measure 1 to 51) with the expectation of Christ’s resurrection from the dead. The theme opens with a motivic variation of bugle theme that was stated in the first movement of the sonata. The exposition part of this work begins at measure 52, where the TRSCH motive repeats continuously in the pedal part against the main theme. Other thematic materials from previous movements occur in this movement. From measure 111 to 118, the first theme from the first movement appears against the main theme of this movement, and the former one is restated at bar 182 to 185. The second theme from the scherzo movement appears against the main theme of this movement at bar 120 to 123. The final section of the piece that commences from measure 195 to 211 contains the TRSCH motive, stated in the pedal part; the motive, originally written in quarter-note notation, is augmented rhythmically to whole note notation, giving one an impression of triumphant splendor. What brings the sonata to a triumphant close is that the TRSCH motive is stated three times, using the full organ registration.

I hope that you enjoy this work.

Composed by Gerhard Krapf. Sacred, General, Hymn-Based Collection. Sacred Music Press #70/1054. Published by Sacred Music Press (LO.70-1054).

UPC: 000308023831.

The first volume of Creative Hymn Accompaniments by Gerhard Krapf met with wide acceptance, and The Sacred Music Press is pleased to offer this companion collection of 31 well-known hymn tunes for general and seasonal use. The organ accompaniments included here avoid extreme departures from traditional harmonies, and instead provide solid and refreshing alterations which will add interest and variety. Use of these accompaniments need not be restricted to a final stanza. Since each accompaniment is playable on one or two manuals, the organ introduction or a selected stanza may feature the tune played on a solo stop or combination. A contrasting stanza may then be played on one manual with principals and mixtures which support the congregational singing. Slight rhythmic adjustments may be necessary in some hymns to fit the variants which exist among different hymnals. Not difficult, and a handy master index for both volumes is provided.

Originally scored for SATB voices, this is the organ arrangement of my first choral work from 2014, and it is dedicated to the memory of Hannah Metzler. The choral version may be downloaded for free at my website (jonathanthomasmadden.com). Arranged for organ in 2022 amidst a continuing pandemic, senseless violence both domestic and abroad, and a difficult season of loss for myself and others, it is my hope that this work continues to bring peace, healing, and comfort to its listeners.

Theme and Variations on TRSCH is a piece that is suitable for concert use. As one plays the piece, one shall realize that each variation has its own character. The work also may be used for educational purposes in that it teaches students on how a theme is transformed rhythmically and arranged melodically.

Theme And Variations On TRSCH For Organ by Thomas R. Schadl consists of seven variations that are based on TRSCH (B flat, D, E flat, C, and B or A# D D# C B). It is written using the serial technique, the compositional method where a row of notes are arranged in direct, reverse, inverse and retrograde-inverse orders. The technique employed is not as strict as the 12-tone system used in the compositions of Arnold Schoenberg and Anton Webern. In a standard theme and variations form, the melody may be altered by adding or subtracting notes, or changing it rhythmically, but it is not the case in the piece being discussed. Most variations do not follow the rhythmic pattern of the main theme; rather, the theme in each variation is treated in fragments, lengthened note values, shortened note values, inversions and reversed orders.

Each variation explores moods and the work is organized this way:

Main Theme: m 1-6           TRSCH is stated in the bass.

Variation I:     m 7-22         Fugato

Variation II     m 23-50       Mystical quality and lyrical

Variation III   m 51-88       Scherzo, lyrical section, scherzo

Variation IV   m 89-116     Toccata

Variation V     m 117-224   Mystical mood, scherzo, mystical mood

Variation VI   m 225-297   Toccata, brief lyrical section, toccata

Variation VII   m 298-317   Variation I but at a slower speed.

Composed by Thomas R. Schadl. Concert,Contemporary,Easter,Spiritual,Standards. Score. 8 pages. Thomas R. Schadl #6519105. Published by Thomas R. Schadl (A0.912510).

Inspired by late-romantic and early twentieth century composers, such as Joseph Rheinberger (1839-1901) and Paul Hindemith (1895-1963), the piece portrays the rising of spiritual light from darkness. The piece starts at a moderate sound intensity and builds up volume gradually until it reaches the fortissimo sections in the last few measures. Fugue in E may be performed during the Easter Sunday service that celebrates Christ’s resurrection from the dead, and may be played as a concert piece.   Organ registrations and tempo indications are only suggestions.

Composed by Thomas R. Schadl. 20th Century,Concert,Contemporary,Standards. Score. 20 pages. Thomas R. Schadl #3241715. Published by Thomas R. Schadl (A0.912488).

Fantasia And Passacaglia On A Mighty Fortress Is Our God for organ is written in celebration of the five hundredth anniversary of the Reformation in Europe. Consisting of the free-form introduction and passacaglia, the piece is based on Martin Luther's hymn tune, and is written in a modern musical idiom that somewhat resembles the style of Max Reger's and Louis Vierne's works for organ, take for example Reger's Fantasia On A Mighty Fortress Is Our God, and Vierne's Sixth Organ Symphony. The Fantasia is suitable for recital use, and employs a wide range of organ registrations that displays various tonal colors and sound intensities. The introduction starts with full of energy and concludes with softer registrations. The passacaglia starts off quietly and builds up sound intensity toward its conclusion, symbolizing victory of good over evil. The metronome marks and organ registrations on some pages are suggestions only, because each organ has different tonal qualities and the acoustics in buildings and halls may influence how organist perform the piece. Fantasia And Passacaglia On A Mighty Fortress Is Our God may take anywhere between thirteen and fifteen minutes to perform.

Composed by Thomas R. Schadl. Contemporary,Instructional,Standards. Score. 8 pages. Thomas R. Schadl #514849. Published by Thomas R. Schadl (A0.912462).

The Scherzo explores a variety of sections that have their own character. The first section is written in a North German toccata style where the opening measures are treated in a canonic manner and played in a series of thirds and sixths against the main theme stated in the pedal division; this compositional approach is somewhat reminiscent of the organ compositions of Dietrich Buxtehude (Prelude and Fugue in G Minor BUXWV 149). The second section is contrapuntal in nature and depicts a humorous moment; that moment may depict a comedy show or a circus event at a fair. Following that section is the recurrence of the main theme of the first movement. The fourth section is quiet in sound intensity and is the most chromatically oriented than other parts. Following that is a fugue, derived from the main theme of the first movement, and a transitional passage leading back to the recurring main theme. The work concludes triumphantly in the key of G Major. The Scherzo requires attention to articulation, phrasing and timing. This work is suitable for educational and recital uses: it introduces organ students to major works of Buxtehude and Johann S. Bach and many more composers; organists of various expertise may play the work to lighten up the audience's mood after listening to more difficult organ works. Let this work bring pleasure into your hearts and the listeners'. Enjoy it.

SKU: A0.912480

Composed by Thomas R. Schadl. Christian,Contemporary,Holiday,Sacred,Standards. Score. 7 pages. Thomas R. Schadl #2949227. Published by Thomas R. Schadl (A0.912480).

Written in a style reminiscent to the fugues of J. S. Bach and Palestrina, this work is educational in that it explores how the main theme and the second theme are treated. The devices used include retrograde, inversion, augmented versions, and the alternation between subject and real answer. Fugue in D Major, being a majestic and uplifting in character, is suitable for memorial services, postludes, and for other occasions. In performing the work, the principal chorus would be a good choice of organ registration for the great division and a quieter registration for the swell or choir division. As the piece progresses towards the end, reed stops may be added to bring brilliance to the work.
