It starts as a dramatic but brooding Prelude, mostly with Impressionistic, seventh chord harmonies and with allusions at Bach's great Fantasia and Fugue in G minor BWV 542, ending with a very short quotation from Carl Orff's De temporum fine comoedia, which provides also the (bi)tonal structure for this entire composition.
