French Horn Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1018931 Composed by Benjamin Harry Sajo. 20th Century,Contemporary. Individual part. 4 pages. Benjamin Sajo #6072965. Published by Benjamin Sajo (A0.1018931). Fugue: Wear Pearls and Smile is, on the outset, a fast, rambunctious adventure for many voices playing at the same time. It was conceived as a pairing for the equally vivacious second symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven–his 250th birthday is this year–but can stand on its own as one of my hardest, most challenging works to cook up.This piece is dedicated to those forced to appear positive when internally they’re falling apart. The title is inspired by a quote that’s been with me for a while, Why is it that men can be bastards and women must wear pearls and smile? by Lynn Hecht Schafren, the celebrated American jurist famous for campaigning for gender equity in courts. I’m taking the quote out of its initial context, but the power of that quote, for me, exemplifies how hard it is to maintain a sense of emotional decorum and dignity when you’re authentically a hot mess. And what’s more of a musical hot mess than a fugue? There are two realities to this piece. I’ll quote Dmitri Shostakovich, from his autobiography: The rejoicing is forced, created under threat, […] It’s as if someone were beating you with a stick and saying, ‘Your business is rejoicing, your business is rejoicing,’ and you rise, shaky, and go marching off, muttering ‘Our business is rejoicing, our business is rejoicing.’ On the one hand, it is insincere happiness, cloying perhaps. But the other truth, I’ll quote Oscar Hammerstein II, from The King and I: While shivering in my shoes / I strike a careless pose / And whistle a happy tune / And no one ever knows, / I'm afraid. I forced myself, against all impulses of my current being, to forge happiness. This piece, with its origin being a mental puzzle (fugues are puzzles), it became a construct where I could lift myself up and regain a sense of purpose. Therefore, it is invented–out of a literal need to survive–pure, genuine happiness.Future Performances: If you are interested in performing this work, please e-mail me.ABOUT THE COMPOSER: Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. French Horn Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1499641 Composed by Gerald W. Gabbard. 20th Century,21st Century. Individual part. 29 pages. Gerald W. Gabbard #1075709. Published by Gerald W. Gabbard (A0.1499641). I created this rhapsody for French Horn and piano when I was an undergraduate piano performance and music education major at Lawrence University's Conversatory of Music in Appleton, Wisconsin. I had friends who played French Horn and also was acquainted with the two French Horn professors who taught at Lawrence during my five years of study at the school. While I realize the horn part is ambitious from the range and amount of playing time, I encourage you to try this piece. It was inspired by the music of Paul Hindemith. The score includes a full score and a horn part. The recording is an export from Finale. I listed the piece as 20th and 21st Century music, since I composed the bulk of the work in the late 20th Century, but finished it in the 21st Century.

Programme Notes: Fanfare: Grit evokes the brassy and rousing tropes of adventure movie soundtracks and Saturday morning cartoons, such as those written by John Williams, Shirley Walker, among others. Writing this piece was an escapade to my own musical roots for this was the first type of music I had been exposed to as a child: incidental music accompanying perilous quests, hairbreadth escapes, and other trials blocking the hero’s path to victory and redemption. I wanted to compose a piece that harkens back to the music that I first fell in love with, that opened up the gates of a legacy--symphonic classical music--that’s always been my solace in trying times. What is grit? Grit is the dirt between smiles and between barefoot toes. Grit is a hard-boiled detective. Grit is tilling the tough soil for the possibility of a beautiful blossoming of flowers.   Grit is saying, See you soon, and making sure it happens. Grit is helping others when it’s hard to help yourself. Grit isn’t easy bravery, but the kind of courage you need to build up brick by brick. The obligatory synonyms: courage, bravery, pluck, mettle, and spirit. Finally, this composition, the fourth of my so-called Beethoven Episodes, was written to accompany Ludwig van Beethoven’s 4th Symphony. This work was written on his 250th anniversary, coincidentally during the Covid-19 Pandemic of 2020, and is the sum of my feelings wrought from that experience. Yet this work was completed on Canadian Thanksgiving, and is also an expression of all that I am grateful for, from the bottom of my heart.

French Horn Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.533556 Composed by Carson Cooman. Concert,Contemporary,Standards. Individual part. 3 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3018605. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533556). River Song: Remembering Dennis Abelson (2007) for solo horn was composed in memory of DennisR. Abelson, horn performer and teacher who died on September 1, 2007 at the age of 56 after aprotracted battle with cancer. Abelson served as long-time professor of horn at Carnegie MellonUniversity in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The work is inscribed “in memory of Dennis Abelson and for hismany students and friends to remember him.â€Dennis commissioned two works from me for the Carnegie Mellon Horn Choir and was alwaysencouraging and interested in what I was doing with his instrument. He leaves behind a verydistinguished legacy of horn students who have held many significant orchestra and teachingpositions throughout the world. When one heard Dennis talk about his students (both current andformer), it was immediately obvious how much he rejoiced in their successes and achievements. This work is founded upon the pitches of D and A, taken from the initial letters of Abelson’s names. It is a rhapsodic elaboration of that basic material – as the melodic material is constantly developedand expanded. The “river†of the title refers both to the flowing character of the music’sdevelopment and to the three rivers of Pittsburgh, the city in which Abelson spent his entire life.
