A short piece for solo unaccompanied tuba, Miniature No. 1 is a playful and light piece that shows the fun and technical side of solo tuba music, but it's also short enough to program as a breather piece between longer solos. It shares a rhythmic motif with another of my pieces, Fallen for unaccompanied tuba, both of which were written at the same time and influenced each other as a sort of positive/negative experience, this being the positive and brighter of the two pieces. The main theme is a connected line ascending through the most lyrical range of the instrument; in between theme statements are quasi-polyphonic lines which use the full range of the tuba to create the illusion of bass, harmony, and melody. The singsong nature of the theme invites rubato interpretation, and expressive annotations throughout the score encourage this further. A majestic theme appears briefly towards the end of the work, which the player should clearly convey as a brilliant and triumphal outcry. The final statement is a long series of delicate, uninterrupted arrpegios decrescendoing to ppp, and is best circular-breathed. This piece demands a high technical level and is for the advanced player seeking to expand their musicality.

Published by Chris Cooke (A0.865253). 50 Favorite Hymns for Solo and Duet Instruments is a sequel to the first book, Hymns for Solo and Duet Instruments.  This second collection contains my all-time favorites and is written for early-mid-intermediate players.  The hymns are written so that instruments can be mixed and matched for duet or ensemble purposes.  Suitable for worship services, they can be played as offertories or special music selections, or as accompaniment to congregational singing.  Many of the hymns are in the traditional hymnal keys, however, there are some that may be slightly lower to accommodate instrumental ranges.  This tuba book contains only the melody of these hymns.
