We have performed the Trumpet Quintet version of this composition quite often for numerous weddings and other special occasions.The Planets, written between 1914 and 1917 by the English composer Gustav Holst, premiered at the Queen's Hall in London, on September 29, 1918 for an invited audience of about 250 people. In the fourth movement, Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity, Holst portrays Jupiter's supposedly characteristic abundance of life and vitality. Nobility and generosity are allegedly characteristics of those born under Jupiter, and in the slower, middle section marked Andante Maestoso, perhaps the most well-known theme from The Planets (and the theme on which this arrangement is based), Holst provides a broad tune embodying these traits. In 1921, Holst adapted the theme to fit the patriotic poem I Vow to Thee, My Country by Cecil Spring Rice, and was written as a unison song with orchestra. It did not appear as the hymn tune until 1926, when Holst harmonized this melody, named Thaxted, named after the English village where he had lived for many years. Holst's friend Ralph Vaughan Williams included it in Songs of Praise. It has since been performed at numerous occasions, most notably for the wedding of Prince Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales in 1981, and also at the funerals of Princess Diana in 1997, Margaret Thatcher in 2013 and Senator John McCain where it was performed at the Washington National Cathedral on September 1, 2018. In addition to being used as the melody for the solemn, patriotic hymn I Vow to Thee, My Country, other settings of this hymn tune also include O God, Beyond All Praising, by Michael Perry in 1982, O Spirit All Embracing by Delores Dufner in 1995 and We Praise You and Acknowledge You, O God, a paraphrase of the Te Deum Laudemus by Stephen P. Starke in 1999.Regis Bookshar thought that it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists could have the opportunity to play this beautiful melody, so, in addition to this Trumpet Quintet version, he has made quite a few other arrangements of this selection. The melody is then played by two instruments in harmony before the rest of the ensemble joins in. This is followed by the March of the Three Kings, a Provencal melody (La Marche Des Rois Mages) which dates from the 13th century and recalls the Three Kings of the Christmas story. The peasants probably sang and danced to this tune, even perhaps honoring their own folk heroes, the French dukes, dressed in their shining armor and carrying brilliant banners, as they marched off to the Crusades. Georges Bizet utilized this tune as a farandole, or stately dance, in his incidental music for Alphonse Daudet's play L'Arlesienne (The Girl from Arles). There is a fugal section in which each instrument enters, playing an embellished version of the tune before concluding the arrangement. From the Swiss Guards in 18th-Century Paris) Der Arabi Nr. 1 (Trad) Arranged by Des McNutty The Basler Fasnacht, known locally in Basel Stadt (CH) as Die drey scheenschte Dääg (the three loveliest days), is a world-famous carnival where the Zeitgeist animates centuries of tradition. Local folks celebrate with a good-humoured satire of current events through costumes, masks, poetry and visual art on carnival floats and lanterns. Amongst many other activities, participants decorate the city and open ad-hoc bars to sustain everyone with drinks and characteristic foods, all of which led to the Basler Fasnacht being included on the Unesco Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2017. Central to the whole experience is the music played on the streets, without electronic amplification, by two types of group: Gugge, with brass and percussion and Clique, with piccolos and side-drums made and played according to local custom. Some Fastnacht Fanfares contains historical melodies from the Cliques' repertoire arranged for Natural Trumpet Ensemble. The Signalkorps can have many players. The parts are in the low, principale register; ideal for newcomers and dilettantes. The ensemble parts require more skill and need only one player on each. s'Läggerli is used with kind permission from the Märtplatz-Clique Basel 1923. The similarity of the other melodies to trumpet calls may not be a total coincidence. Cavalry regiments, with their roots in armoured, mounted knights of even earlier times, were considered nobler; therefore they used royal trumpets and timpani for signalling and entertainment duties. So playing trumpet-style tunes on flutes adds a bit of class. Der Arabi Nr. 1 is now better known as The British Grenadiers from the early 1700s but can be traced as far back as the 1560s, when the Basler Fasncacht was already centuries old and the Schweizerpfeife (Swiss Flute), with drums, supplied the de rigueur regimental music for foot-soldiers all over Europe. Fasnacht is a glorious celebration laced with a melancholy reflected by the marching tempi of the Cliques: often slower than 90 BPM. A “standard� march is around 120 BPM. Vyyl Vergniege! (Enjoy!).

Carol of the Bells was written by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych in 1914 with lyrics by Peter J. Wilhousky. The song is based on the Ukrainian folk chant Shchedryk, a New Year's song, known in English as The Little Swallow, and utilizes a four-note ostinato which brings to mind the ringing of bells. Originally intended to be sung a capella by a mixed four-part choir it has since been recorded into over 150 versions and re-arrangements for various vocal and instrumental compositions. The original composition was written in D Major but Regis Bookshar has transposed it to Bb Major, making it a little easier for many modern musicians. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (8 pages). The 17th century composer, Henry Purcell, is generally considered to be one of the greatest English composers of his generation. His Sonata for Trumpet and Strings in D Major, composed in 1694, was probably written for the London Theatre, where a fine tradition of trumpet playing had developed. Purcell almost certainly had in mind either John Shore or his brother, William, the most renowned trumpet players in England at the time. The trumpets of the time were normally tuned in D and there were no valves on the Baroque trumpets, so they were limited in the number of notes that they could play. The term Sonata here probably means no more than a piece of incidental music and looks forward to the style that would become the solo concerto where soloist and strings are pitted against each other but also looks back to an older type of instrumental music which emphasized equality between members of the ensemble. The music is in three movements and looks forward to the fast-slow-fast plan popularized by Vivaldi's concertos. Regis Bookshar thought that it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists, besides trumpet players, could also have the opportunity to play the Allegro movement from Purcell's Sonata for Trumpet, so he has created other arrangements of this selection. The Coronation March was ordered by the city of Moscow for the coronation of Tsar Alexander III in 1883. It was written during March of 1883 and was performed for the first time on June 4, 1883 in Sokolniky Park in Moscow, conducted by Sergei Taneyev. The music then included excerpts of the anthem, God Save the Tsar. The American premiere was on May 5, 1891, for the opening concert of Carnegie Hall in New York City, conducted by Tchaikovsky himself. During the Soviet Era, Russian performances and recordings of the music were revised to omit the excerpts from the Czarist national anthem, replacing it with thematic material used earlier in the march, due to an official Soviet ban on the anthem. Starting with Dmitri Medvedev's inauguration in 2008, an abbreviated version of this piece is played during the Russian presidential inauguration accompanying the entrance of the incoming president, and ends well before the playing in this piece of the Tsarist anthem God Save the Tsar. Unlike Tchaikovsky's other major compositions, the Coronation March does not have an opus number. It has been given alternative catalogue designations TH 50 and CW 47. Tchaikovsky's Coronation March was originally scored for a full orchestra and written in the key of D Major. Regis Bookshar has now created an abbreviated version, written in Db Major, and has arranged it for a Trumpet Quintet, consisting of 5 Bb Trumpets. A canon is a polyphonic device in which several voices play the same music, entering in sequence. Pachelbel's Canon in D, was originally written in the key of D Major and was scored for three violins arranged in canon, accompanied by a basso continuo which repeats the same harmonic progression throughout the entire piece. The common musical term for this is ostinato or ground bass. Regis Bookshar has now arranged this music for a Trumpet Quintet. Three Trumpets play the melody in canon while the ostinato accompaniment is played by the other two Trumpets. This arrangement is suitable for high school and college students but could also be performed by professional performers. It is one of the many arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library that are becoming available for the first time. The common musical term for this is ostinato or ground bass. Regis Bookshar has now arranged this music for a Trumpet Quintet. Three Trumpets play the melody in canon while the ostinato accompaniment is played by the other two Trumpets. This arrangement is suitable for high school and college students but could also be performed by professional performers. It is one of the many arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library that are becoming available for the first time. It is perfect for concerts and church services, especially for Weddings, but could be performed for any occasion. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (30 pages). This version is written in the key of Bb Major, to make it a little easier for some younger performers, but another version is also available in the key of D Major if you would prefer. Other versions of Pachelbel's Canon have also been arranged by Regis Bookshar and are available for a wide variety of instrumental Quintets and Octets, in both the keys of D Major and Bb Major. I think that String players would probably prefer to play the versions in the key of D Major while the Brass and Woodwind musicians might prefer to play the Bb Major versions. I hope you take the time to compare the different versions to find the right version for you. To help you decide which version, or versions, you may want to choose, I have included several musical samples for you to listen to and to hear what these arrangements may sound like and so that you may compare the various arrangements. Also, just to let you know, the Octets written in the key of Bb Major have full-length recordings while the Octets in D Major and all Quintets have only the first 25 measures, or so, available to hear.
