This book has posed some issues as it is such complex music it is almost impossible to cut it down to 5 parts while maintaining its integrity. As a result, some songs will be in 6 or more parts. S'el vostro cor, Madonna is set as a tenor and bass duet. Monteverdi tries out many different combinations of voices in this book as he works to build the different tools which will eventually all find their way into opera. The first lines translate as If your heart, Lady, So soft towards others and is a plea from an obviously love-stricken young man to the object of his desires who favours another. The seventh book is quite a change from the earlier ones. Monteverdi seems to be concentrating on developing solos and duets, trios and small accompanied ensembles. The accompaniments are often written out with more than just long note chords. The intricate instrumental parts are more than just filling in the harmony (hence the difficulty in paring them down.) Once again, these songs are exquisitely crafted and travel well onto brass.

As a result, some songs (like this one) will be in 6 or more parts. Soave libertate - Sweet freedom is a song in which a young man is bemoaning being captured by a young lady, and losing his freedom. Monteverdi sets the text as a tenor duet, perhaps creating the impression of the young man bemoaning his loss of freedom to himself. The seventh book is quite a change from the earlier ones. March of the Hunters features in the opera Der Freischütz, which is possibly the best known work by the German Romantic composer Carl Maria von Weber (1786 – 1926).  The story is based on an old folk tale and tells of a marksman who, desperate to win the hand of the lady he loves in a shooting contest, obtains some magic bullets which cannot fail to hit their target.  One of these, however, is entirely under the control of the Devil…This arrangement is for semi-flexible mixed woodwind quartet of 2 flutes, oboe and either B-flat clarinet or bassoon.  Well within the scope of intermediate-level players, it can be used as a recital piece, as part of a programme of light background music at a wedding or function, or just enjoyed as general repertoire.

This is a love poem describing the virtues of a young lady. The language is flowery and obtuse, but none-the-less beautiful. The first line translates as Gentle midst the hidden thorns. It is obvious that Monteverdi is enlarging his scope with this trio for all male voices (2 tenors and a bass) as the soloists, with a more complex accompaniment that many of the previous songs. The accompaniment is complex enough to deserve it's own ensemble, so I have arranged it à7 as follows: 1 - Part 1 in F/Eb (Tenor 1) - Horn 2 - Part 2 in F/Eb (Tenor 2) - Horn 3 - Part 3 in C/Bb (Bass) - Euph/Trom/Barit 4 - Part 4 in Bb - Trumpet/Cornet 5 - Part 5 in Bb - Trumpet/Cornet 6 - Part 6 in C/Bb - Trom/Euph/Barit 7 - Part 7 in C/Eb - Tuba/Eb Bass

Nevertheless, the traditional link between chivalry and the gallant knight on horseback is quite evident. In the music itself, which has a consistent underlying pulse, Burgmüller cleverly manipulates the notation to express the various gaits of a horse, starting with an 'elegant but unsteady walk' and culminating in a brilliant semiquaver gallop! It’s great fun to play. Scored for two Alto's, Tenor and Baritone Saxophones with alternative parts so it can be played by four Alto's.

Lady Sara is an original piece for trombone, guiro and piano, but the composer reworked the piece for woodwind quartet (flute, oboe, clarinet in Bb, and bassoon). The danza form is: Promenade- AA-BB- CC (or Trio)- A'. The tradition of danza has a main melody (play by the flute or the oboe in this arrangement), a counter melody (play by the clarinet) and an accompaniment (play by the bassoon). The trio or part C has some kind of virtuoso textures but not so fast. The harmony of this arrangement is from the 21st Century (jazzy and pop).

He wrote the mass for the Cathedral at Reims, where he served as a canon, a permanent clergy member. According to a rubric found at the Cathedral, it would have likely been performed for the Saturday Lady Mass. Guillaume de Machaut's Messe de Nostre Dame is significant in the history of music for several reasons: It is the first complete setting of the Ordinary of the Mass by a single composer that has survived. It is a unified mass, meaning that the composer selected relevant chants for each section as the borrowed tenor. It was composed in four voices, which was unusual at the time. The texts of both Gloria and Credo are quite lengthy, and therefore Machaut set these movements in a style reminiscent of the earlier discant style, having short phrases, similar rhythmic motion in all parts, and a low ratio of notes per syllable of text, both ending with long, rhapsodic sections for the final word, Amen. Machaut's Messe de Nostre Dame is a landmark in musical history, but it is far from being avant-garde merely for the sake of uniqueness. It is considered to be a culmination of the musical style of the Ars Nova period, which was characterized by complex polyphonic textures and rhythmic innovations. The mass is also significant because it was composed during a time of great political and social upheaval in Europe, and it reflects the changing attitudes towards religion and music during this period. Overall, Machaut's Messe de Nostre Dame is a significant work that represents a culmination of the musical style of the Ars Nova period and reflects the changing attitudes towards religion and music during the 14th century. The mass consists of five movements: Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei, followed by the dismissal Ite, missa est.
