SKU: A0.1258034

Composed by Guillaume de Machaut, 1300-1377. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Chamber,Contest,Early Music,Festival,Historic,Medieval. 38 pages. Jmsgu3 #851272. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1258034).

Instrumentation: English Horn Duo & Bassoon Duo.
1. Kyrie
2. Gloria
3. Credo
4. Sanctus
5. Agnus dei
6. Ite missa est

Guillaume de Machaut composed the Messe de Nostre Dame, also known as the Mass of Our Lady, in the early 1360s. He wrote the mass for the Cathedral at Reims, where he served as a canon, a permanent clergy member. According to a rubric found at the Cathedral, it would have likely been performed for the Saturday Lady Mass.Ā

Guillaume de Machaut's Messe de Nostre Dame is significant in the history of music for several reasons:

  • It is the first complete setting of the Ordinary of the Mass by a single composer that has survived.
  • It is a unified mass, meaning that the composer selected relevant chants for each section as the borrowed tenor.
  • It was composed in four voices, which was unusual at the time.
  • The texts of both Gloria and Credo are quite lengthy, and therefore Machaut set these movements in a style reminiscent of the earlier discant style, having short phrases, similar rhythmic motion in all parts, and a low ratio of notes per syllable of text, both ending with long, rhapsodic sections for the final word, Amen.
Machaut's Messe de Nostre Dame is a landmark in musical history, but it is far from being avant-garde merely for the sake of uniqueness. It is considered to be a culmination of the musical style of the Ars Nova period, which was characterized by complex polyphonic textures and rhythmic innovations. The mass is also significant because it was composed during a time of great political and social upheaval in Europe, and it reflects the changing attitudes towards religion and music during this period. Overall, Machaut's Messe de Nostre Dame is a significant work that represents a culmination of the musical style of the Ars Nova period and reflects the changing attitudes towards religion and music during the 14th century.Ā

The mass consists of five movements: Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei, followed by the dismissal Ite, missa est. The tenor of the Kyrie is based on Vatican Kyrie IV, the Sanctus, and Agnus correspond to Vatican Mass XVII, and the Ite is on Sanctus VIII. The Gloria and Credo have no apparent chant basis, although they are stylistically related to one another. The mass is a unified mass, meaning that the composer selected relevant chants for each section as the borrowed tenor. The Messe de Nostre Dame is significant in the history of music because it is the first complete setting of the Ordinary of the Mass by a single composer that has survived. It is also significant because it was composed during a time of great political and social upheaval in Europe, and it reflects the changing attitudes towards religion and music during this period.Ā

Overall, the Messe de Nostre Dame was an important part of the liturgical practices of the time, and it is still regarded as a masterpiece of medieval music and of all religious music.

Composed by traditional tune, composer unknown. Arranged by Ray Kamada. Classical,Jazz,Renaissance,Wedding. 14 pages. The Lone Arranger #3055947. Published by The Lone Arranger (A0.757312).

Here, the soprano voice retains the original Aeolian tune, which predates Simon & Garfunkel's song by ~600 years. However, this version adds syncopation and counter melodies to the lower voices, as modern accompaniment for an ancient melody. With new lyrics written expressly for wedding preludes and processionals, this arrangement is suitable for flutes, oboes, or violins, together with b flat clarinet, and either a cello or bassoon. For example, the accompanying mp3 features a flute, violin, clarinet, and cello combo that seems to blend well.

From The Well-Tempered Clavier Book 2 BWV 870-893

In Bach's own words ..... for the profit and use of musical youth desirous of learning, and especially for the pastime of those already skilled in this study....., we are literally invited by the great man himself, to enjoy playing his music in virtually any combination we like!

The Wind Quartet is a fitting vehicle for these two pieces from The Well-Tempered Clavier Book 2, namely the Prelude No.1 and the Fugue No.22.

The Prelude

Completely different from the Prelude that opens Book 1, which is mainly broken chords, this opening Prelude to Book 2 features a continuously flowing sequence of melodic ideas. According to Levinson, few pieces of traditional music are more purely processive as this. It develops without a break or pause, without arrivals of significance, from beginning to end Good to play as well!!

The Fugue

Of course this Fugue should be in the key of Bb Minor, but to avoid all those nasty Fb's and E#'s etc the key has been altered just to make the music flow a little better in this instrumental combination (imho!), coupled with the time signature of 3/2, this Fugue should prove interesting in rehearsal! The four voices are distributed throughout the parts, and at 101 bars, it is certainly one of Bach's longest, and definitely one of the most enjoyable to play, especially in a generous acoustic.

Also available here in Clarinet Quartet and Saxophone Quartet flavours!!

Composed by Claudio Monteverdi. Arranged by Mike Lyons. Baroque,Renaissance. Score and parts. 25 pages. Lyons Music Services #3543483. Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767357).

Continuing my edition of Monteverdi's complete madrigal books, here is no 19. This is a love poem describing the virtues of a young lady. The language is flowery and obtuse, but none-the-less beautiful. The first line translates as Gentle midst the hidden thorns.

It is obvious that Monteverdi is enlarging his scope with this trio for all male voices (2 tenors and a bass) as the soloists, with a more complex accompaniment that many of the previous songs.

The accompaniment is complex enough to deserve it's own ensemble, so I have arranged it Ć 7 as follows:

1 - Part 1 in F/Eb (Tenor 1) - Horn 2 - Part 2 in F/Eb (Tenor 2) - Horn 3 - Part 3 in C/Bb (Bass) - Euph/Trom/Barit 4 - Part 4 in Bb - Trumpet/Cornet 5 - Part 5 in Bb - Trumpet/Cornet 6 - Part 6 in C/Bb - Trom/Euph/Barit 7 - Part 7 in C/Eb - Tuba/Eb Bass

Composed by Claudio Monteverdi. Arranged by Mike Lyons. Baroque,Renaissance. Score and parts. 56 pages. Lyons Music Services #3544649. Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767363).

At long last I have nearly finished the 7th book. This book has posed some issues as it is such complex music it is almost impossible to cut it down to 5 parts while maintaining its integrity. As a result, some songs will be in 6 or more parts.

This is the largest song so far. It is very complex and was originally composed as a Soprano solo with a 9-part 'orchestra' split into three unequally sized 'choirs'. Choir 1 consisted of two cittarones (a kind of theorbo or archlute), a clavicembalo (early harpsichord) and a spinet.

Choir 2 comprised a string orchestra (viole da brazza, violins, viole da braccia, clavicembano (sic) and basso continuo).

Choir 3 comprised individual instruments viola da braccio or gamba, basso da braccio or gamba, contrabass and an (unnamed) keyboard.

As you might imagine, this was well nigh impossible to reduce to 5 players, so I have transcribed it for 9 brass instruments, more or less keeping to the original 'choir' groupings with a trumpet/cornet solo line. This is also one of the longest songs so far.

I hope you enjoy the result.

The text translates as: How softly, scented lips, I kiss you or listen to you. The poet is describing his inability to both kiss and hear his beloved's voice at the same time.

The following parts are supplied:

Part 1 in Bb (Solo) - Trumpet/Cornet Part 2 in Bb (Tutti 1) - Trumpet/Cornet Part 3 in C/Bb (Basso) - Euphonium/Trombone/Baritone Part 4 in Bb (Tutti 2) - Trumpet/Cornet Part 5 in Bb (Tutti 3) - Trumpet/Cornet Part 6 in F/Eb - Horn Part 7 in F/Eb - Horn Part 8 in C/Bb - Trombone/Euphonium/Baritone Part 9 in C/Bb - Trombone/Euphonium/Baritone Part 10 in C/Eb - Tuba/Eb Bass

The seventh book is quite a change from the earlier ones. Monteverdi seems to be concentrating on developing solos and duets, trios and small accompanied ensembles. The accompaniments are often written out with more than just long note chords. The intricate instrumental parts are more than just filling in the harmony (hence the difficulty in paring them down.)

Once again, these songs are exquisitely crafted and travel well onto brass.
