A popular, traditional English folk song arranged here for the 4-part mixed woodwind combination of two flutes, oboe and either clarinet in B-flat or bassoon.
Greensleeves is sometimes credited to Henry VIII, the style of composition suggests a later, Elizabethan, origin. The piece appears in various late sixteenth and early seventeenth century manuscript collections and is mentioned in Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor, which was written around 1597.
The founder of the Mr Whippy ice cream company had a particular interest in Henry VIII and, believing him to be the composer of Greensleeves, chose the tune to use as the jingle heralding the arrival of his ice cream vans.
