This charming song is a tale of unrequited love, related by a young man as he rows homewards on Loch Tay.  It makes a lovely arrangement for the 4-part mixed woodwind combination of 2 flutes, oboe and clarinet/bassoon.The tune is a variant on an old melody collected in the Moidart district of Scotland in 1870.  Words were later added by Harold Boulton, who also wrote the lyrics to the more famous Skye Boat Song. Renowned for its salmon fishing, Loch Tay is the sixth largest freshwater loch in Scotland, stretching from Killin up to Aberfeldy.  A number of local landmarks are mentioned in the words of the Loch Tay Boat Song.

A traditional fiddle tune from Scotland's Shetland Isles, arranged here for 4-part mixed woodwind combination of 2 flutes, oboe and either clarinet in B-flat or bassoon.  This piece makes a lively addition to general repertoire, or can be used in a recital programme either as a light-hearted interlude or an upbeat encore.  Although classed as 'intermediate', the difficulty level depends very much on the speed at which the piece is played!The title of The Merry Boys of Greenland appears with many subtle variations – ‘the’ is sometimes replaced by ‘da’, ‘of’ by ‘o’’ and ‘merry’ as ‘merrie’ or ‘mirrie’. It is believed that the ‘Merry Boys’ of the tune may have been recruited from the Shetland Isles (the northernmost island group off the coast of Scotland) to form the crew for whaling expeditions to the seas between Greenland and Canada.

The Maple Leaf Rag is an early work by the African-American ragtime composer, Scott Joplin.  It was first published in 1899, although Joplin had been performing it for some years prior to this.  The composer was confident that the work would be a commercial success and, indeed, in due course, royalties from the piece provided him with a stable income for life. Joplin wanted The Maple Leaf Rag performed at his funeral.  His widow opted not to honour this request, feeling that the music was stylistically inappropriate for such a sad occasion – a decision she later regretted.This arrangement for mixed woodwind quartet of 2 flutes, oboe and either clarinet or bassoon is pretty challenging, both in terms of technique and stamina, hence its classification as 'advanced intermediate'.  If desired, players could opt to finish at the change of key at letter F, rather than performing the complete piece.

To be a Regular Royal Queen is part of the finale to Act 1.  Two of the principal gondoliers and two of the contadine sing of what they perceive as the perks of being royalty – such as rich clothing, valuable possessions and being universally admired and respected.The piece makes a joyful, appealing arrangement for the four-part mixed woodwind combination of 2 flutes, oboe and either clarinet in B-flat or bassoon.  It has been classed as 'intermediate' as, although it appears quite challenging, various adult learner groups have managed it surprisingly successfully.  To increase the difficulty, increase the tempo!
