During his period at the court of the Esterházy family, Joseph Haydn spent time working alongside gypsy musicians.  The influence of Hungarian folk tunes is evident in some of his best known works.  String Quartet Op. 20, No. 4 is often known as the ‘Gypsy’ quartet and the concluding movement of his Piano Trio in G Major (Hob. XV:25) is a rondo in traditional folk style.  This ‘Gypsy Dance’ is one of a set of 8, originally written for piano but arranged here for semi-flexible mixed woodwind quartet.

This piece has been classed as 'intermediate' as, despite the alarming opening key in the clarinet parts, it is actually fairly approachable.

Roman Hoffstetter was a great admirer of Joseph Haydn and so good an imitator of his style that his six opus 3 quartets were thought to be by Haydn and were catalogued as such (Hob. III: 13 - 18). The four movements, Presto, Andante Cantabile (which has always been very popular), Minuet & Trio and Scherzando, have been arranged for flute, oboe, clarinet & bassoon for players of advanced intermediate standard or higher.  Hoffstetter invariably wrote good tunes - the Andante has remained popular since he composed it.  Most of his other compositions were unfortunately destroyed in a fire.

The string quartet is the second of three that Mozart wrote in 1790 for Friedrich Wilhelm  II, King of Prussia, who was clearly a very good amateur cellist. There are four movements, Allegro, Larghetto, Minuetto and Allegro assai and the style and scale is very similar to that of the contemporary quartets by Joseph Haydn.

This arrangement is suitable for advanced players.

In arranging this for woodwind quartet, it has been necessary to re-distribute the parts to reflect the different characteristics of each of the wind instruments. For example, the interplay between the violins which are effectively interchangeable would not always work so well between the flute and oboe. The original makes extensive use of the high range of the cello which is frequently above the range of the bassoon and has sometimes been transposed down an octave or given to the clarinet. The phrasing has been adapted to be more suitable for the wind instruments and players should feel free to make further adaptations - particularly with the addition of slurs or staccato. I have been restrained in the addition of slurs as adding too many may have an adverse effect on breath control - a staccato passage uses less breath.

Was originally one in a set of 12 dances for a charity ball in Vienna in 1792. They were scored for both orchestra and piano. Would work well for a beginner or student woodwind quartet.

This arrangement of Mozart's first string quartet composed between 1770 and 1773 when he was still a teenager and pupil of his father, Leopold, is, nevertheless, a remarkable achievement. The string quartet pioneered by Haydn was still a very new format. The Rondo added in 1773 at the suggestion of Leopold completed the four movements which became the usual format. The movements  - Adagio, Allegro, Menuetto & Trio and Rondo provide fairly equal interest for all four players and this arrangement for flute, oboe, clarinet in A and bassoon of at least intermediate standard. If the oboe part in bar/measures 9/10 of the first movement sounds familiar, Mozart re-used and expanded this in the second movement of his concerto for flute & harp K.299.

French composer and music publisher Ignaz Pleyel (1757 – 1831) was celebrated in his own time but has since fallen into relative obscurity.  A pupil of Haydn, his works are characterised by charm and simplicity, making them very ‘pleyel-able’ for student instrumentalists.

This charming Rondo makes an ideal short recital item, as well as a great addition to general repertoire.  The semi-flexible scoring extends its usefulness!
