The first of six  sonatas for four equal players published ‘avec Privilege du Roi’ in Paris in 1731. They were published as a set of parts for three transverse flutes or violins or other instruments ‘avec la Basse’. There are four movements, all in G minor, Adagio, Presto, Adagio & Allegro.  The only dynamic marking is the ‘Piano’ marked at the end of the last movement. The ornaments  - trills, mordants & grace notes - are all carefully included and further decoration of the parts was not expected in French music of this period unlike in Italian music. However, more experienced players should feel free to add a little more decoration at the final cadences of the slow movements. None of the movements have repeated sections and it is clear from the flow of the music that this is not an omission. Missing slurs have been added (dashed lines) along with a few phrasing suggestions.  The arrangement includes a clarinet which would not have been  available until over 30 years after publication but this arrangement is most likely to be played on modern instruments so it gives a modern woodwind quartet the opportunity to play music of this period in the appropriate style. Players of intermediate ability will enjoy this piece.

This four movement sonata was composed for pairs of oboes and bassoons in about 1740. This edition has been edited and arranged for woodwind quartet for players  who wish to play in the authentic style on modern instruments.All edits are shown using dashed lines or parenthesis ( ). No dynamics are indicated on the original manuscript and, tempting though it was, I have refrained from adding my own. The musical interest is shared equally between the four parts and throughout the whole piece no section is marked to be repeated. A short improvised cadenza by one of the players would have been added in the final bar/measure of the first movement (marked “Adagio�). I hope that many players from intermediate to professional standard will enjoy this delightful sonata.

This arrangement of Mozart's first string quartet composed between 1770 and 1773 when he was still a teenager and pupil of his father, Leopold, is, nevertheless, a remarkable achievement. The string quartet pioneered by Haydn was still a very new format. The Rondo added in 1773 at the suggestion of Leopold completed the four movements which became the usual format. The movements  - Adagio, Allegro, Menuetto & Trio and Rondo provide fairly equal interest for all four players and this arrangement for flute, oboe, clarinet in A and bassoon of at least intermediate standard. If the oboe part in bar/measures 9/10 of the first movement sounds familiar, Mozart re-used and expanded this in the second movement of his concerto for flute & harp K.299.

The Overture Suite was a form and style of music popular in the 17th and first half of the 18th centuries. The early suites consisted of sets of the popular dance movements at the time and would have been used to accompany dancing. The overture was a later addition - probably for more formal  occasions - and enabled the composer to show off his skill before the dancing began. Telemann developed the form over the first half of the 18th century composing suites for a wide variety of instrumental combinations from groups of wind instruments for outside events, solo instruments with string orchestra, to string quartet, which was the original version of Overture Burlesque and one of the first string quartets.Instead of the usual dance titles, Telemann used characters associated with Scaramouche, a stock clown character - Harlequin the Joker, Columbine, Pierrot, Mezzetin en turc, the Narcissus of pantomime - and a pair of Menuets.  The suite would have been staged and the music played robustly to suit the characters as they danced. Players of intermediate standard and above will have fun playing this.The suite is arranged for flute, oboe, clarinet and bassoon to play as a concert piece or as an accompaniment to a stage performance.The tempo indications are suggestions in parentheses ( ) as are the additional dynamic markings. Some additional cadential trills have been added without comment. All added slurs are shown with dashed lines with the exception of those in Menuet 2 which I feel are necessary because of the change from string to wind instruments. You are, of course, free to disagree.
