Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quartet - Digital Download SKU: A0.1111552 Composed by Alan Edgar. Baroque. 12 pages. Alan Edgar Ted Moon #713844. Published by Alan Edgar Ted Moon (A0.1111552). I have shamelessly combined ideas from three famous pieces popular for funerals: Pachelbel's Canon, Elgar's Nimrod from the Enigma Variations and Chopin's Marche Funebre from his 2nd Pianoforte Sonata. So it is a passacaglia, having a solemn repeating 4 bars in the bass; 8 variations on a 4 bar phrase; and an accompanied canon having each variation repeated twice, in the second oboe and clarinet after delays, while a new variation appears in the 1st Oboe. All in D minor, but a tierce de Picardie ends the piece. Only 3 minutes: after all that work!

Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quartet - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.757312 Composed by traditional tune, composer unknown. Arranged by Ray Kamada. Classical,Jazz,Renaissance,Wedding. 14 pages. The Lone Arranger #3055947. Published by The Lone Arranger (A0.757312). Here, the soprano voice retains the original Aeolian tune, which predates Simon & Garfunkel's song by ~600 years. However, this version adds syncopation and counter melodies to the lower voices, as modern accompaniment for an ancient melody. With new lyrics written expressly for wedding preludes and processionals, this arrangement is suitable for flutes, oboes, or violins, together with b flat clarinet, and either a cello or bassoon. For example, the accompanying mp3 features a flute, violin, clarinet, and cello combo that seems to blend well.

Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quartet Bassoon,Clarinet,Flute,Oboe - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.811818 Composed by Georg Philipp Telemann (1681 - 1767). Arranged by Pat Spence. Baroque,Concert,Holiday,Wedding. 40 pages. Piper Publications #6533127. Published by Piper Publications (A0.811818). This quartet is the second piece in the first of three sets of ‘Tafelmusik’ published in Hamburg by Telemann in 1763. The numbers of players required ranged from a single treble instrument with continuo (cello & harpsichord) to pairs of trumpets, horns and violins with string orchestra with continuo which provided the entertainment for the guests at the most important feasts. The quartet was originally written for flute, oboe, violin and continuo and has been arranged for flute, oboe, clarinet & bassoon. Some additional phrasings and dynamics have been added in parentheses ( ) or dashed lines and passages of music have been redistributed among the parts with some octave transposition to accommodate the range of the wind instruments. There are three movements: Largo - Allegro - Largo, Vivace - Moderato - Vivace & Grave - Vivace. The quartet is suitable for advanced intermediate players and above. The short Grave introduction to the final Vivace would have afforded the three treble instrument players a bar/measure each to perform a short improvised cadenza before the infectious romp of the final Vivace. (Rather like the present day introductions of the athletes before important competitions - the difference being that the 18th century musicians had already demonstrated their prowess.Telemann clearly had very talented musicians available and provided them with music which was enjoyable to play for an appreciative audience of patrons to enjoy.

Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quartet Bassoon,Clarinet,Flute,Oboe - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.956671 Composed by Scott Joplin. Arranged by Catriona Melville-Mason. Concert,Ragtime,Standards. 16 pages. C Melville-Mason #6867577. Published by C Melville-Mason (A0.956671). The Maple Leaf Rag is an early work by the African-American ragtime composer, Scott Joplin.  It was first published in 1899, although Joplin had been performing it for some years prior to this.  The composer was confident that the work would be a commercial success and, indeed, in due course, royalties from the piece provided him with a stable income for life. Joplin wanted The Maple Leaf Rag performed at his funeral.  His widow opted not to honour this request, feeling that the music was stylistically inappropriate for such a sad occasion – a decision she later regretted. This arrangement for mixed woodwind quartet of 2 flutes, oboe and either clarinet or bassoon is pretty challenging, both in terms of technique and stamina, hence its classification as 'advanced intermediate'.  If desired, players could opt to finish at the change of key at letter F, rather than performing the complete piece.

Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quartet Bassoon,Clarinet,Flute,Oboe - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.956673 Composed by Sir Arthur Seymour Sullivan. Arranged by Catriona Melville-Mason. Concert,Opera,Standards. 15 pages. C Melville-Mason #6867583. Published by C Melville-Mason (A0.956673). This tune comes from The Gondoliers, the twelfth of the Victorian comic opera collaborations between WS Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan.  The Gondoliers premiered in December 1889 and ran for 554 performances. To be a Regular Royal Queen is part of the finale to Act 1.  Two of the principal gondoliers and two of the contadine sing of what they perceive as the perks of being royalty – such as rich clothing, valuable possessions and being universally admired and respected. The piece makes a joyful, appealing arrangement for the four-part mixed woodwind combination of 2 flutes, oboe and either clarinet in B-flat or bassoon.  It has been classed as 'intermediate' as, although it appears quite challenging, various adult learner groups have managed it surprisingly successfully.  To increase the difficulty, increase the tempo!

Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quartet Bassoon,Clarinet,Flute,Oboe - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.956656 Composed by Antonin Dvorak. Arranged by Catriona Melville-Mason. Concert,Romantic Period,Standards. 8 pages. C Melville-Mason #6505735. Published by C Melville-Mason (A0.956656). This piece is taken from the second set of Slavonic Dances, Opus 72, written by Czech composer Antonín Dvořák in 1886. His original set, Opus 48, had proved to be something of a breakthrough work, finally establishing Dvořák’s reputation well beyond his native land. The dances are original melodies, inspired by, and drawing on, the character of traditional national dances – not, as is sometimes thought, works based on existing folk tunes, as was the fashion among composers at around that time.  Both sets of Slavonic Dances were originally written for piano 4 hands but, in response to a request from his publisher, the composer produced orchestrated versions shortly afterwards. This is an arrangement for semi-flexible mixed woodwind quartet of 2 flutes, oboe and either B-flat clarinet or bassoon.  The piece makes a charming addition to general repertoire but could also be used as part of a programme of light background music at a wedding or function.
