I have shamelessly combined ideas from three famous pieces popular for funerals: Pachelbel's Canon, Elgar's Nimrod from the Enigma Variations and Chopin's Marche Funebre from his 2nd Pianoforte Sonata. So it is a passacaglia, having a solemn repeating 4 bars in the bass; 8 variations on a 4 bar phrase; and an accompanied canon having each variation repeated twice, in the second oboe and clarinet after delays, while a new variation appears in the 1st Oboe. All in D minor, but a tierce de Picardie ends the piece. Only 3 minutes: after all that work!

Here, the soprano voice retains the original Aeolian tune, which predates Simon & Garfunkel's song by ~600 years. However, this version adds syncopation and counter melodies to the lower voices, as modern accompaniment for an ancient melody. With new lyrics written expressly for wedding preludes and processionals, this arrangement is suitable for flutes, oboes, or violins, together with b flat clarinet, and either a cello or bassoon. For example, the accompanying mp3 features a flute, violin, clarinet, and cello combo that seems to blend well.

Carol of the Bells, or the Ukrainian Bell Carol, is an old New Year Carol and was performed using hand bells. It is said to be based on the traditional Ukrainian folk chant, Shchedryk.

This arrangement is for 4 Oboes and is in G minor. It would be a great piece for a group of students to enjoy together.

This quartet is the second piece in the first of three sets of ‘Tafelmusik’ published in Hamburg by Telemann in 1763. The numbers of players required ranged from a single treble instrument with continuo (cello & harpsichord) to pairs of trumpets, horns and violins with string orchestra with continuo which provided the entertainment for the guests at the most important feasts.

The quartet was originally written for flute, oboe, violin and continuo and has been arranged for flute, oboe, clarinet & bassoon. Some additional phrasings and dynamics have been added in parentheses ( ) or dashed lines and passages of music have been redistributed among the parts with some octave transposition to accommodate the range of the wind instruments.

There are three movements: Largo - Allegro - Largo, Vivace - Moderato - Vivace & Grave - Vivace. The quartet is suitable for advanced intermediate players and above.

The short Grave introduction to the final Vivace would have afforded the three treble instrument players a bar/measure each to perform a short improvised cadenza before the infectious romp of the final Vivace. (Rather like the present day introductions of the athletes before important competitions - the difference being that the 18th century musicians had already demonstrated their prowess.

Telemann clearly had very talented musicians available and provided them with music which was enjoyable to play for an appreciative audience of patrons to enjoy.

PROGRAMME NOTE: This depicts aspects of spider life, and the reactions of an arachnophobe. In the introduction, we hear the 12- note-row then very long pauses as the spider waits for prey to approach. Frenetic activity leads to the capture of prey and its consumption. The arachnophobe (instruments or players) scream on seeing the spider. A relatively consonant waltz depicts the halting, tapping, very careful, mating dance of the male. She eats him anyway. Next we limn the hundreds of babies hatching and abseiling down on their threads. This of course makes the arachnophobe scream again.

This Sonata is the last of a set of ten Sonatas in 4 parts (2 violins,cello & basso continuo) dedicated to Lady Rhodia Cavendish and published in 1697, two years after Purcell's death by his widow. The 5 movements, Adagio, Canzona, Grave, Largo & Allegro are intended to be performed as one continuous piece. In arranging the Sonata for flute, oboe, clarinet in A and bassoon, changes of register have been necessary to suit the ranges and character of the wind instruments. All editings are shown in parentheses ( ) or [ ] with dashed lines for added slurs. Players of intermediate standard will find that the challenge of this sonata is more one of style and precision than technical difficulty. More advanced players will revel in the sheer inventiveness of the short lived Henry Purcell.
