Nimrod, the ninth variation from Elgar's masterpiece Op. 36, Enigma Variations (1898-99) is possibly the most recognized work in the classical repertoire. There are few works in the repertoire that bring forth such strong emotions as this work, which is often performed for funerals and for Remembrance Day services. It is believed that the ‘Merry Boys’ of the tune may have been recruited from the Shetland Isles (the northernmost island group off the coast of Scotland) to form the crew for whaling expeditions to the seas between Greenland and Canada.

This tune comes from The Gondoliers, the twelfth of the Victorian comic opera collaborations between WS Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan.  The Gondoliers premiered in December 1889 and ran for 554 performances. To be a Regular Royal Queen is part of the finale to Act 1.  Two of the principal gondoliers and two of the contadine sing of what they perceive as the perks of being royalty – such as rich clothing, valuable possessions and being universally admired and respected.The piece makes a joyful, appealing arrangement for the four-part mixed woodwind combination of 2 flutes, oboe and either clarinet in B-flat or bassoon.  It has been classed as 'intermediate' as, although it appears quite challenging, various adult learner groups have managed it surprisingly successfully.  To increase the difficulty, increase the tempo!

A popular, traditional English folk song arranged here for the 4-part mixed woodwind combination of two flutes, oboe and either clarinet in B-flat or bassoon.Greensleeves is sometimes credited to Henry VIII, the style of composition suggests a later, Elizabethan, origin.  The piece appears in various late sixteenth and early seventeenth century manuscript collections and is mentioned in Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor, which was written around 1597. The founder of the Mr Whippy ice cream company had a particular interest in Henry VIII and, believing him to be the composer of Greensleeves, chose the tune to use as the jingle heralding the arrival of his ice cream vans.
