This is a gospel song sung at many church and secular events for over 20 years. This inspirational song can be performed in a wide range of venues in or outside places of worship. A traditional encore begins at measure 14, beat 3. It goes to the 2nd Ending and continues to the end of the piece; no repeats. The author, Richard Smallwood, is quoted to say, It’s a song that gives praise to God, transcending church walls and going places I never thought it would go, circa 2015.  The arranger is Brian Leverett. He has a Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Music Education from Wayne State University and has now retired from teaching Elementary and Middle School Band in the Detroit Public Schools. He also has been an avid member of handbell choirs for twenty years.

This is Maestro’s favorite advent carol, for as he frequently recalls, I sang a solo in ‘Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus’ when I was in a renowned boy choir many years ago. I understand, from Maestro, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. I’ll reserve comment on that one! This well-known hymn tune dates back to the Baroque period, and was used by composers like Bach and Buxtehude even before it was sung in churches with the text O God, Our Help in Ages Past. The text is about time; our fleeting time and God’s presence throughout time. Time is portrayed with a bell motive chiming the hour, a lovely countermelody, the constancy of the singing bells, and then the pealing celebratory bells for the final stanza. Besides the varied handbell techniques in the piece, the lovely additions of optional flute and cello add foundational sound and gravity to the piece. While the lyrics were first published 1858 the song is definitely older than that and the original songwriter is unknown. The song has been covered many times by many different artists over the years. This arrangement by Mark Lewis is for bell weaving trio. All three parts are significantly easier if the ringers utilize traveling 4-in-hand techniques and there are some very quick bell changes. While the piece is challenging, most intermediate players should be able to perform it with sufficient practice time.

The text was written by Charles Wesley and has been used in Advent services regularly since it was written in the 1740s. The text is often set to many tunes but the one used in this version is Hyfrydol, This tune was written by Rowland Prichard about 100 years after Wesley's text and is used extensively in many hymnals but especially for this particular text. This arrangement is for 3-5 octave handbell choir, although it is unusual in that the 4 octave version does require the use of the F3 bell. Other than that this is a relatively simple, if thickly orchestrated, arrangement. There are three sections using different methods of music making, the first is regular ringing, the second is extensive marts and mart-lifts, and the third explores musical canon before bringing back the more traditional bell ringing styles.

This Allegro (the final movement)was originally scored for oboes, clarinets, English Horns, Horns in Eb, and Bassoons. Filled with life and energy, the work has many phrases, which quickly alternate between rung notes and staccato notes and can be thumb damped, plucked, or played with mallets. This piece should be rung at a brisk tempo, cleanly damped, and have the clarity and lightness typical of Mozart's early writing. Achieving this will make the piece more difficult than it may first appear.
