This piece pays homage to the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. A tone poem is a piece of orchestral music, usually in a single continuous movement, which illustrates or evokes the content of a poem, short story, novel, painting, landscape, or other non-musical source. This tone poem exhibits the entitlements of man and nature by the use of contrasting and opposing tonalities (C Major and B Major). Although, the first movement is Straus’s most famous selection, this arrangement is from the lesser known second movement translated: Of Those at the Back of the World. This lullaby type song conjures a slow emotional music that rises and fall. Perhaps it could be a type of love story. The arranger is Brian Leverett. He has a Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Music Education from Wayne State University and has now retired from teaching band in the Detroit Public Schools. He also have been an avid handbell choir member for twenty years.

Hummel is a composer and musician from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Scott holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a Bachelor of Music in Audio and Music Production from Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Pennsylvania. He has performance experience in keyboard instruments, choral music, and percussion. His introduction to the carillon came through listening to the 62-bell instrument housed in the Chimes Tower at Longwood Gardens, Kennett Square, Pennsylvania.
