Level 4 • This creative and varied arrangement of the French carol NOËL NOUVELET is an exciting musical option for both the Christmas and Easter seasons. The opening uses randomly malleted bells along with a freely rung melody. It is ethereal and still, suggesting the new birth of both seasons. The remainder of the piece is energetic and rhythmic, with malleted bass bells and the use of martellato, martellato-lift, and shaking. The music is further enhanced by the use of chime tree, finger cymbals, tambourine, and tenor drum.

Level 4 • This programmatic original composition will be a unique addition to the concert repertoire, as it is reminiscent of movie music. Its descriptive style tells a tale of love and loss, adventure and peril, and mystery and drama. A free, mystical opening leads into a delicate main theme in a minor key, accompanied by finger cymbals and chime tree. The opening strains provide a transition into an energetic ride in 12/8 time with rhythmic, malleted bass bells under a strong treble melody and using tambourine for rhythmic support. The bass and middle bells are then given the melody in an antiphonal style, followed by a return to the malleted bass and the upper-treble melody with the addition of a tenor drum. The section closes in great triumph but gives way to randomly malleted bells and a return to the mysterious opening strains.

Third in a set of jazz hymntune arrangements, this very upbeat, swingy rendition of Hymn to Joy features solo trumpet, string or electric bass, and drum set along with the handbells. This energetic setting of the tune ELLACOMBE uses syncopated percussion parts to build a polyrhythmic texture, providing a somewhat different flavor to this well-known martial hymn. Handbell entrances of derivative motives follow the percussion opening. These first 20 measures could easily be memorized and used as a processional. After a stately announcement of the tune, the middle section contains refreshing harmonic interest and a slower tempo for variety, followed by a rousing reprise of the hymn complete with percussion.
