Handbell - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.953728 Composed by Anonymous and Ralph E. Hudson. Arranged by G. R. Adkison. Christian,Easter,Sacred. Score. 4 pages. Gary Ray Adkison #14273. Published by Gary Ray Adkison (A0.953728). He Is So Good is a 3-4-5 octave, 45 measure medley of the Christian hymns God Is So Good and At the Cross (Alas, and Did My Savior Bleed) arranged for 3-4-5 octave handbell choirs. Because of the inclusion of At the Cross, this arrangement might be suitable for Easter/Lent. The overall theme is the love of God for us, whether as the Father or as Jesus. The strategy of this arrangement is to start out softly and *very* plainly and build---both in volume and in complexity. From the chorus of At the Cross to the end, a lot of doubling of the melody in the highest bells is used. There are two surprise modulations used in the chorus of At the Cross. In At the Cross there are chords used that are more interesting than those in the original hymn. After the triple-forte volume level at the end, there is a mezzo-piano tag, echoing the melody of the preceding musical phrase, with a chord progression that is substantially different from the original version of this hymn. This arrangement is probably a 3 plus (3+) level of difficulty, with the plus being due to some eighth-note runs in the bass line towards the end of At the Cross. The demonstration audio file provided is in a piano voice (patch) but suffices to demonstrate how the arrangement is generally meant to sound.

Carillon,Instrumental Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1301689 By Duke Ellington and his Orchestra. By Duke Ellington, Irving Mills, and Juan Tizol. Arranged by Michael Gancz. 20th Century,Broadway,Film/TV,Jazz,Latin,Musical/Show. Individual part. 8 pages. Michael Gancz #891301. Published by Michael Gancz (A0.1301689). Caravan is one of Duke Ellington's (1899-1974) most famous compositions—although he didn't actually write it. That credit goes to Puerto Rican trombonist Juan Tizol (1900-1984), a member of the Ellington's big band from 1929 to 1944. Tizol composed the theme in 1936 and promptly sold the rights to lyricist Irving Mills for only $25. The song became an instant hit—jazz critic Ted Gioia expllains that it fit perfectly with the musical exoticism that patrons were demanding at [Ellington's] regular gig at the Cotton Club in Harlem. Indeed, much jazz from this era, especially Ellington's, was steeped in Orientalist aesthetics. Although we hear it now as a self-contained musical phenomenon, we must acknowledge this music's problematics even as we continue to celebrate its progressive and revolutionary qualities. Part of my interest in this piece is in its capacity as a vessel in which I can explore my own multiform identity as an expatriate of the Middle East, a carillonist, and a lover of jazz. This arrangement reflects what might happen when these three perspectives collide. Ellington recorded Caravan more than 100 times, and the names of its additional interpreters reads as a history of jazz itself: Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey, Nat King Cole, Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton Marsalis and dozens more all brought their own spin to the tune. What makes it particularly special, though, is its appeal to listeners outside the jazz fandom. The 2014 film Whiplash introduced mass audiences to the song's unique atmosphere and to the genius of the Duke and his sidemen, thanks to an outstanding big band arrangement by John Wasson. My setting of the tune for the carillon recalls both Duke and Tizol's original version and this more recently popular edition. In this arrangement, I hope to highlight the carillon's capacity as a percussion instrument, and to use this as a bridge into the world of jazz. A successful interpretation will focus on groove, stratification of voices, and balance. Try to keep the pedals light!Michael Gancz2023Sources:Gioia, Ted (2012). Handbell - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.953727 Composed by William B. Bradbury and John B. Dykes. Arranged by G. R. Adkison. Christian,Sacred. Score. 5 pages. Gary Ray Adkison #14257. Published by Gary Ray Adkison (A0.953727). Holy God Medley is a medley of the Christian hymns: He Leadeth Me, O Blessed Thought and Holy, Holy, Holy arranged for 4-5 octave handbell choirs. It starts with a two measure introduction, followed by He Leadeth Me, O Blessed Thought. This is fairly up-tempo, with a surprise modulation going into the chorus. In the chorus, there are bass runs, a brief descant line, and doubling of the melody into the high bells. There are then two verses of Holy, Holy, Holy. The first verse is slow and is in ¾ time, instead of the normal common meter. It is also soft and *very* plain, as a setup for the last verse, which is faster, and grows in volume to the end, with much fuller chords, and uses the normal common meter that the original hymn uses. There is another surprise modulation halfway through this verse. Very full chords are used, with a brief bass clef downward arpeggio in the next to last measure, to emphasize the ending. The first verse of Holy, Holy, Holy can be performed with handchimes, if desired, although the arrangement is not scored as such. The audio demonstration clip provided is in a piano voice (patch) but suffices to demonstrate how this arrangement is generally meant to sound. I believe that this is probably a 2+ (2 plus) arrangement in degree of difficulty.

Handbell - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.938904 Composed by Richard Strauss. Arranged by Brian Leverett. 20th Century,Sacred. Score. 7 pages. Timbila Music Co. #3004823. Published by Timbila Music Co. (A0.938904). Also sprach Zarathustra (1896) (Thus Spoke Zarathustra) is a tone poem by Richard Strauss (1864-1949). This piece pays homage to the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. A tone poem is a piece of orchestral music, usually in a single continuous movement, which illustrates or evokes the content of a poem, short story, novel, painting, landscape, or other non-musical source. This tone poem exhibits the entitlements of man and nature by the use of contrasting and opposing tonalities (C Major and B Major). Although, the first movement is Straus’s most famous selection, this arrangement is from the lesser known second movement translated: Of Those at the Back of the World. This lullaby type song conjures a slow emotional music that rises and fall. Perhaps it could be a type of love story. The arranger is Brian Leverett. He has a Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Music Education from Wayne State University and has now retired from teaching band in the Detroit Public Schools. He also have been an avid handbell choir member for twenty years.

2 or 3 octaves handbells - Level 2- - Digital Download SKU: C7.CGB577 Composed by Kathleen Wissinger. Holy Week, Lent. With 2 or 3 octaves handchimes. Score. 4 pages. Chorister's Guild - Digital #CGB577. Published by Chorister's Guild - Digital (C7.CGB577). UPC: 749193013823.Level 3+ * This dramatic original work is a musical interpretation of the text from Isaiah 53:4-5: Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows.... A simple accompaniment of quarter-note chords lies under the plaintive yet lyrical melody, which grows and develops throughout the first section. The melody and the accompaniment become increasingly more complex and aggressive until reaching a dissonant, fortissimo climax, when random ringing with chimes delicately accompanies a return of the melody. Appropriate during Lent or whenever this scripture passage is used (RCL, Year B, Proper 24.).

This four-movement original work illustrates a prayer by David Dillon, which he used on his own vision quest. The movements use recurring but evolving themes, reflecting each petition of the prayer. A myriad of percussion instruments enhance the mystical quality of the music. The movements are entitled: I. I pray to the West which gives us rest and reflection; II. I pray to the North which gives us patience and purity; III. I pray to the East which gives us energy and emotions; IV. I pray to the South which gives us discipline and direction. Handbell - Digital Download SKU: A0.781189 By Henry Mancini. By Henry Mancini. Arranged by Kathleen Henson. Jazz. Score. 4 pages. Kathleen Henson #3239771. Published by Kathleen Henson (A0.781189). For 3 Otcave Handbells AGEHR Level: 2 This arrangement has a few bell changes but the tempo is slow enough to allow the changes to occur with little difficulty.  It does shift until a new key and once there the bell changes are minimal.  Mercer and Mancini wrote the song for Audrey Hepburn to sing in the film Breakfast at Tiffany's. The lyrics, written by Mercer, are reminiscent of his childhood in Savannah, Georgia, including its waterways. As a child, he had picked huckleberries in summer, and connected them with a carefree childhood and Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn.

Handbell - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.953733 Composed by Frank M. Davis, Henry Smart, John Hughes, Robert Lowry, William B. Bradbury, and and George A. Young. Arranged by G. R. Adkison. Christian,Sacred. Score. 10 pages. Gary Ray Adkison #14705. Published by Gary Ray Adkison (A0.953733). God: Our Leader Medley is a 120 measure arrangement for 4-5 octave handbell choir and 3 octaves of OPTIONAL associated handchimes, although the handchime parts can also be played by handbells. The overall theme is the leadership of God in the life of the Christian. This is a medley of 7 Christian hymns. The first 4 are requests---requests to God to lead us. The last 3 are descriptions of God leading us (responses by God). The 1st request is presented by the handchimes playing Savior Lead Me. This is a simple, easy to play section in the key of D. Still in D, the 2nd request is Lead on, O King Eternal. After a false modulation, the 3rd request is Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us. This features a few bass runs. After a modulation to the key of G, the 4th request starts with Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehova. Also featuring some bass runs, it also makes use of descant lines. The 1st response, also in G, is All the Way My Savior Leads Me. This section is not in the original 3/4 time, but in 4/4 time, although near the end it reverts to the normal 3/4. It makes heavy use of fills and a brief descant line. The 2nd response is a 6/4 version of God Leads Us Along in the key of C. Again, there is a brief descant line. The last response is He Leadeth Me, also in C, that features two descant passages, and bass runs in the last two lines. After the first section of the overall arrangement, the chords used are often significantly more interesting than the chords normally used with these 7 hymns. This arrangement uses various dynamic and tempo markings, in order to achieve musical contrast, and still be true to the character of the original hymns. (The MP3 audio demonstration file provided is in a piano patch (voice), although the actual arrangement is for (and, of course, will sound better with a) handbell choir.) This arrangement is probably a level 2+ (2 plus) degree of difficulty.
