Small Ensemble Handbell - Level 3 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1047376

Composed by Jeanette Threlfall and W. H. Monk. Arranged by Mark R Lewis. Easter,Holiday,Sacred,Standards. Score and parts. 2 pages. Mark R Lewis #651935. Published by Mark R Lewis (A0.1047376).

Hosanna, Loud Hosanna is a well-known Palm Sunday hymn that celebrates Jesus' special relationship with children and his triumphal entry into Jerusalem at the beginning of Holy Week. Jeanette Threlfall wrote the text as a devotional poem in the mid-1800s. The tune most associate with the text, Ellacombe, comes from songbook of the Württemberg ducal court and was harmonized by W. H. Monk in the mid-1800s as well. The name Ellacombe is thought to be in honor of Henry Thomas Ellacombe, a specialist in bell ringing and an Anglican clergyman. This version was arranged by Mark R Lewis for 12-Bell ensemble. While the melody line for this arrangement is quite straightforward, the accompaniment part can be very active. Despite this, the piece should be quite manageable by most intermediate bell ringers. In the provided video of the performance, the bell tree is simply doubling the melody line and while this is a nice touch, it is not required for a faithful performance of the arrangement. Range: F#5-C7.

Composed by Frederic A. Challinor. Arranged by Mark R Lewis. Chamber,Christian,Religious,Sacred. 3 pages. Mark R Lewis #745192. Published by Mark R Lewis (A0.1144874).

Tell Me the Stories of Jesus is a sweet little hymn written in 1885 supposedly at the request of a Sunday school class. The tune is quite simple but still quite lovely. The lyrics were written by William Henry Parker and the tune by Frederic A. Challinor. This particular arrangement by Mark Lewis is for a bell weaving trio. Ringers 1 and 2 will need to be able to utilize travelling 4-in-hand techniques, Ringer 3 will need to be able to keep a very steady waltz pattern going while switching between bells, and all ringers will have some very quick bell changes. While the piece is challenging, most intermediate players should be able to perform it with sufficient practice time.

Composed by Oscar Ahnfelt and Charles H. Gabriel, Walter Stillman Martin, and William Henry Monk. Arranged by G. R. Adkison. Christian,Sacred. Score. 6 pages. Gary Ray Adkison #15171. Published by Gary Ray Adkison (A0.953732).

God: My Helper, Comforter, Companion, Provider, Protector is a 71 measure arrangement for 4-5 octave handbell choir, and OPTIONAL 3 octaves of handchimes. It is a medley of Christian hymns that deal with some of the attributes of God, as they relate to His followers. Specifically, it includes Abide with Me, God Will Take Care of You, Day by Day and Just When I Need Him Most. It is probably a level 3+ arrangement. The God Will Take Care of You section starts with a duet in the handchimes, with the melody line switching from treble clef to bass clef, in the verse. Of course, handbells can be used instead of handchimes, if desired. In the chorus, martellato is used in the bass clef, while there is a descant going on in the high treble clef, with the melody sandwiched in between. In the last section (Just When I Need Him Most) interesting chords, bass runs and melody line doubling, with chords filled in between the doubled melody notes, build to an ending culminating in a repeat of the last musical phrase, at a slower, more majestic tempo. The first 3 selections are more laid-back; the last is presented in a more energetic fashion.

Composed by Geistliche Kirchengesang, Henry Smart, Michael Praetorius, Thomas Helmore, and Traditional English Carol. Arranged by G. R. Adkison. Christian,Christmas,Sacred. Score. 6 pages. Gary Ray Adkison #14447. Published by Gary Ray Adkison (A0.953730).

The First Christmas is an 84 measure, 4-5 octave, handbell choir medley of the Christmas carols: The First Nowell, O Come, O Come Emmanuel, Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming, and Angels from the Realms of Glory Parts of O Come, O Come Emmanuel, and Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming are scored for OPTIONAL 3 octaves of handchimes, but handbells can be substituted, if desired. Those two carol selections are reserved, reverent, soft and slow, in contrast to the first and last selections, which are much more exuberant in nature. This medley varies in tempo, volume levels, and style, throughout. Towards the end, there are tolls (swings) and a shake. It includes a brief introduction and an extended half-timed ending. Occasionally, there are descant lines and bass runs. I believe that this would be a level 2+ (2 plus) arrangement. The MP3 audio file provided is in a piano voice (patch) but suffices to demonstrate how this arrangement is generally meant to sound.

Composed by COMPOSER Henry John Gauntlett, and a Traditional French Carol. Arranged by G. R. Adkison. Christian,Christmas,Sacred. Score. 4 pages. Gary Ray Adkison #30517. Published by Gary Ray Adkison (A0.953737).

Song of Christmas is an arrangement for 3-4-5 octave handbell choir. It is a 56 measure Christmas carol medley. It starts with Once in Royal David's City, in the key of F. The first verse uses handchimes, although handbells can be substituted for the chimes, if desired. The second verse is louder, switches to handbells, uses fuller chords and is in the key of Bb. The last two musical phrases of this carol are repeated, grandioso. There is then a softer handchime repeat of the last phrase. Without pause, it begins a lively version of Sing We Now of Christmas in Eb. The melody alternates between handchimes and handbells. When the chimes are playing, the bells only play fills, etc. There is a brief (2 measure) passage with handbells in the key of D, then it switches back to Eb for the big ending, using only bells. The ending is half-timed, with a descending chordal descant to the martellato stinger. (Throughout the entire arrangement, handbells can substitute for handchimes.) This arrangement is probably about a level 2 degree of difficulty.

Composed by Frank M. Davis, Henry Smart, John Hughes, Robert Lowry, William B. Bradbury, and and George A. Young. Arranged by G. R. Adkison. Christian,Sacred. Score. 10 pages. Gary Ray Adkison #14705. Published by Gary Ray Adkison (A0.953733).

God: Our Leader Medley is a 120 measure arrangement for 4-5 octave handbell choir and 3 octaves of OPTIONAL associated handchimes, although the handchime parts can also be played by handbells. The overall theme is the leadership of God in the life of the Christian. This is a medley of 7 Christian hymns. The first 4 are requests---requests to God to lead us. The last 3 are descriptions of God leading us (responses by God). The 1st request is presented by the handchimes playing Savior Lead Me. This is a simple, easy to play section in the key of D. Still in D, the 2nd request is Lead on, O King Eternal. After a false modulation, the 3rd request is Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us. This features a few bass runs. After a modulation to the key of G, the 4th request starts with Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehova. Also featuring some bass runs, it also makes use of descant lines. The 1st response, also in G, is All the Way My Savior Leads Me. This section is not in the original 3/4 time, but in 4/4 time, although near the end it reverts to the normal 3/4. It makes heavy use of fills and a brief descant line. The 2nd response is a 6/4 version of God Leads Us Along in the key of C. Again, there is a brief descant line. The last response is He Leadeth Me, also in C, that features two descant passages, and bass runs in the last two lines. After the first section of the overall arrangement, the chords used are often significantly more interesting than the chords normally used with these 7 hymns. This arrangement uses various dynamic and tempo markings, in order to achieve musical contrast, and still be true to the character of the original hymns. (The MP3 audio demonstration file provided is in a piano patch (voice), although the actual arrangement is for (and, of course, will sound better with a) handbell choir.) This arrangement is probably a level 2+ (2 plus) degree of difficulty.
