The song was written by Pete Seeger and Lee Hays for the folk group The Weavers. It was made famous by the group Peter, Paul, and Mary and the singer Trini Lopez whose versions both charted in the top 10 on the charts in the 1960s.This version is arranged for 2-4 octave handbell choir and makes heavy use of mallets for most of the piece. There are some very quick changes between using mallets and normal ringing and there are a lot of syncopated rhythms throughout the piece. These challenges make this arrangement ideal for smaller bell choirs that are still at a intermediate or higher playing ability. Even though the song is not specifically intended for church services, the message of the song can be incorporated into quite a variety of religious themes.The arrangement is in the key of C with no accidentals. It starts with Once in Royal David's City, in the key of F. The first verse uses handchimes, although handbells can be substituted for the chimes, if desired. The second verse is louder, switches to handbells, uses fuller chords and is in the key of Bb. The last two musical phrases of this carol are repeated, grandioso. There is then a softer handchime repeat of the last phrase. Without pause, it begins a lively version of Sing We Now of Christmas in Eb. The melody alternates between handchimes and handbells. When the chimes are playing, the bells only play fills, etc. There is a brief (2 measure) passage with handbells in the key of D, then it switches back to Eb for the big ending, using only bells. The ending is half-timed, with a descending chordal descant to the martellato stinger. (Throughout the entire arrangement, handbells can substitute for handchimes.) This arrangement is probably about a level 2 degree of difficulty.

It is flowing and meditative, with colorful LV patterns and melody both in the bass and treble.The arrangement is for full bell choir using 3-6 octaves of handbells. Rated at a Level 2 when played with 11-12 ringers because of its slow tempo and easy rhythms, “A Stroll on ‘Duke Street’� can be interpreted very musically, with crescendos and spiritually high moments. Its three verses are each treated differently, with the last verse raises the key signature a half step and then yet another half step as it grows with intensity. Although based on a hymn tune, the title allows this arrangement to be used for any audience.For sacred environments, the arranger suggests that the text be studied for inspiration. There are several words set to the tune “Duke Street,� although the arranger favors the text that begins, “I know that my redeemer lives.� When performing the piece, use the first verse as a humble (and somewhat hesitant) prayer, the second verse more confident (by relying for God's promises), and the third verse as if obtaining divine reassurance. This would place the prayer-giver in a place of wonder – a spiritual mountain-top experience. We Gather Together is one of my favorite hymns, and I'm sure Maestro would agree that it has a lovely melody. Key of D, two pages, no key changes. Performance time is 1: 25 if you take the repeat, shorter without it. PRACTICE HINT:  The dotted quarter note in the melody may be unfamiliar to some beginning handbell ringers. Some clapping exercises with the melody might be helpful. In addition, the second layer (those notes with stems going down) does not play the dotted rhythm. It would be wise to have those ringers practice their smooth, consistent lines before pairing them with the more syncopated melody.

The text of the original song by Brian M. Howard begins, If I were a butterfly, I’d thank you Lord for giving me wings. It follows with other stanzas in different styles for different creatures of our world. Though the tune is simple and memorable, the ringing skills require malleting, some chromatics, grace notes, handchimes, gyros and shakes. This bouncy, joyous arrangement will be a delightful addition to worship services, concerts and festivals.

When played with 12 ringers, the piece is rated at Level 5.Filled with interesting and contrasting rhythms and techniques, this arrangement is fun to play and thoroughly enjoyable to hear. Each range of the bells is featured in different ways at different times in the piece. The middle bells have a lot of rhythm and technique changes which are not very difficult and will keep the ringers smiling. The super bass bells sometimes play the part of the timpani or strong brass, and at other times have a counter melody all their own. The high bells may carry the melody (often doubled in octaves), but that same melody is often echoed in the other bell ranges as well just a beat or two later.The arranger recommends that ringers listen to an orchestral recording of this composition. It is arranged in the same key, and (if you can) could be rehearsed together.  If you have enough hands available, the arranger provides suggestions for an added triangle part.This arrangement is dedicated to Bay Bells, an advanced community handbell choir that the arranger Cheryl (Sutton) Baker (also known as Cheryl Woldseth) directed from 1986 to 1997. Under her leadership, Bay Bells and the subset Bay Bells Ensemble performed throughout California, Oregon, Nevada, and Hawaii, plus they toured Indonesia in 1996 and also performed at the 1996 International Handbell Symposium in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
