This is a collection of four traditional hymns arranged for five handbell ringers and brass quintet.

Each of these arrangements is intended as a Call to Worship.  They may be used with choral or congregational singing.

The bells and brass play an introduction, and then accompany the first stanza of singing.  The second and/or third stanzas have no bell/brass accompaniment, but should be sung with organ/piano accompaniment or a cappella.  The last stanza includes bells, brass, and organ/piano accompaniment.  Each arrangement has a closing section for bells and brass, to give the piece a more unified form, connecting the beginning and the ending.

This piece, which was the second movement of the cantata, was originally written for soprano and contralto duet, accompanied by cellos, double bass, and organ. The handbell arrangement incorporates all these parts. The bells ring the accompaniment parts and the soprano solo while the handchimes ring the contralto solo. The lowest bass line is always malleted while the upper bass line has an interesting and challenging eighth note pattern. Differentiating between accompaniment and solo lines, making the listener aware of both soprano and contralto solo lines, and ringing the piece at a brisk tempo will prove quite challenging to the advanced bell choir.

Although only 32 measures long, ringers will be challenged by the necessity for clean damping of the many 16th-note passages. Work to achieve the suggested tempo of a quarter note equals M.M. 84-96.

Level 2- • This gently flowing music is based on one of Bach's most beautiful, haunting tunes. It is often heard as a choral anthem or a vocal or organ solo. With the constant ringing of solid chords building to a crescendo in the middle section, the use of a few techniques such as TD, mallets, or SK (with vibrato when rung by handchimes) are sprinkled throughout to reach a forte climax. The piece then closes with a more subdued ending.

Commissioned in memory of Carolyn Tenery, the bright opening and closing themes of this original composition are filled with syncopation, expressing the colorful and happy nature of Carolyn's personality. Sections using mallets, echoes, martellatos and shakes are employed, as Carolyn was a percussionist who loved techniques on handbells. The contrasting middle section is the blue period, and is best played on handchimes if possible. This work is suitable for worship, festivals and concerts. The alternate title, The Colors of Love, may be used in secular settings.

The tune SICILIAN MARINERS is treated in a bouncy, joyful style, with malleted bass and rung treble bells. The optional use of sleigh bells lends a festive spirit to the original introduction and interludes. The tune moves into the bass and lower treble bells in the next section, accompanied by upper treble bell patterns including a variety of techniques. A gentle, rocking motion in 3/4 time provides a contrast in style, concluding with the bouncy feel of the beginning. Optional parts for sleigh bells, triangle or finger cymbals and tambourine are included. The two editions are compatible for massed ringing.
