This arrangement of the Zingarelli motet for mixed chorus is effectively transcribed for handbells and optional handchimes by Martha Lynn Thompson. The slow, somber opening section, in F minor, is very effective when rung entirely on handchimes. At measure 22 the key changes to F major, the tempo changes to Allegro guisto, and if handchimes were used for the opening section, the handbells are used from here to the end of the piece. To aid in interpretation of the music, the choral text is provided on page 8.

This piece, which was the second movement of the cantata, was originally written for soprano and contralto duet, accompanied by cellos, double bass, and organ. The handbell arrangement incorporates all these parts. The bells ring the accompaniment parts and the soprano solo while the handchimes ring the contralto solo. The lowest bass line is always malleted while the upper bass line has an interesting and challenging eighth note pattern. Differentiating between accompaniment and solo lines, making the listener aware of both soprano and contralto solo lines, and ringing the piece at a brisk tempo will prove quite challenging to the advanced bell choir.

This familiar opening to the Bach Cantata 142, appropriate for both worship and concert, could also be used to replace the orchestra or organ in presenting the overture within the context of the entire cantata. Although only 32 measures long, ringers will be challenged by the necessity for clean damping of the many 16th-note passages. Work to achieve the suggested tempo of a quarter note equals M.M. 84-96.

Two Manger Carols is a setting for handbells, optional handchimes, flute, and oboe incorporating Whence Comes this Rush of Wings Afar (also known as Carol of the Birds) and Sleep of the Child Jesus.  The opening phrase uses the singing bell technique, over which the flute plays a figure representing the rush of wings and the oboe introduces the carol melody. Throughout the arrangement, the melody moves between handchimes, flute, oboe, and handbells.  Care must be taken to balance the dynamics of the various instruments, especially taking care that the oboe doesn't overpower the ensemble.  As the piece slows to the end, carefully observe dynamics and musically interpret the text, King of Glory, sleep. .

Divertimento No. 3 in E-Flat Major is said to have been written by Mozart when he was only seventeen years old. This Allegro (the final movement)was originally scored for oboes, clarinets, English Horns, Horns in Eb, and Bassoons. Filled with life and energy, the work has many phrases, which quickly alternate between rung notes and staccato notes and can be thumb damped, plucked, or played with mallets. This piece should be rung at a brisk tempo, cleanly damped, and have the clarity and lightness typical of Mozart's early writing. Achieving this will make the piece more difficult than it may first appear. Those familiar with MozartAEs The Sleigh Ride and his Alleluia from EXSULTATE JUBILATE, will be able to hear elements of both in this delightful piece.
