Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. General. Score. 8 pages. Chorister's Guild - Digital #CGB742. Published by Chorister's Guild - Digital (C7.CGB742).

Level 1+ • This selection from Beethoven's Symphony No. 6 (Pastoral) musically depicts the clearing of the sky following a thunderstorm and builds into a joyful, hymn-like melody. Written in 3/4 time rather than Beethoven's original 6/8 and using only quarter, half, and dotted-half notes, the arrangement is easy enough for beginning ringers yet contains dynamic contrasts and techniques to challenge more experienced ensembles as well. While especially fitting for school and community concert settings, the piece is also appropriate for worship in celebrating the grandeur of God's creation.

Uplifting and sweet, this arrangement of The Lord’s My Shepherd, I’ll Not Want (BROTHER JAMES’ AIR) makes use of stirring crescendos and orchestral-sounding sweeping musical lines.  The quiet waters of the Psalm 23 text are reflected in the shimmering, peaceful first verse.  The second verse gains momentum (My soul He doth restore again) and the powerful crescendo into the third verse brings a confident sense of peace (Yea, though I walk in death’s dark vale / yet will I fear no ill).  At the final cadence, ethereal, unusual harmonies give way to a serene resolution, symbolizing heaven as a final resting place, calling to mind the last lines of the text: and in God’s house forevermore / my dwelling place shall be.  The optional flute part sweetens the lovely soft sections and adds flourish and weight to the majestic third verse and coda.

Commissioned in memory of Carolyn Tenery, the bright opening and closing themes of this original composition are filled with syncopation, expressing the colorful and happy nature of Carolyn's personality. Sections using mallets, echoes, martellatos and shakes are employed, as Carolyn was a percussionist who loved techniques on handbells. The contrasting middle section is the blue period, and is best played on handchimes if possible. This work is suitable for worship, festivals and concerts. The alternate title, The Colors of Love, may be used in secular settings.
