The Power of the One is a 67 measure, 4-5 octave medley of Christian hymns whose unifying theme is the Power of the (One) God. This medley is comprised of I Sing the Mighty Power of God, Praise the Lord Who Reigns Above, Eternal Father, Strong to Save (The Navy Hymn) and He Is Able to Deliver Thee. The first two of these hymns are upbeat, and include some melody doubling into the highest octave. Those two and the last hymn make use of occasional descant lines. He Is Able to Deliver Thee is very lively, and utilizes both an occasional descant line, and (fairly fast) bass runs. In between Praise the Lord Who Reigns Above and He Is Able to Deliver Thee, you have the slower, and much more reverential Eternal Father, Strong to Save (also known as The Navy Hymn), which uses handchimes, although bells can be substituted for the chimes. This selection helps add a contrast in style, tempo and volume to the other three. At the end, there is a tag consisting of the last part of Praise the Lord Who Reigns Above at a slower tempo, and at a triple forte dynamic level, for a grandioso ending. The fast bass runs contribute to my thinking that this arrangement is probably a 3+ difficulty level.

This can be taught to ringers by drilling the bass clef rhythm in measures 35-40 with the I want to be in America rhythm from Westside Story. Although there are no bell changes in this arrangement, interest for the ringers and listeners comes from the variety of techniques including martellato, thumb damps, swings, and mallet work (on the table, suspended, and rolls!). Set a in a key that is comfortable for congregational singing, this arrangement works well with an optional acoustic guitar, bass, and cajon (box drum).

UPC: 749193024553.Uplifting and sweet, this arrangement of The Lord’s My Shepherd, I’ll Not Want (BROTHER JAMES’ AIR) makes use of stirring crescendos and orchestral-sounding sweeping musical lines.  The quiet waters of the Psalm 23 text are reflected in the shimmering, peaceful first verse.  The second verse gains momentum (My soul He doth restore again) and the powerful crescendo into the third verse brings a confident sense of peace (Yea, though I walk in death’s dark vale / yet will I fear no ill).  At the final cadence, ethereal, unusual harmonies give way to a serene resolution, symbolizing heaven as a final resting place, calling to mind the last lines of the text: and in God’s house forevermore / my dwelling place shall be.  The optional flute part sweetens the lovely soft sections and adds flourish and weight to the majestic third verse and coda.

Throughout all of life’s trials, hope gives us the strength to rebuild and confidently reinvent our circumstances. Rays of Hope is an original piece for handbells that depicts the remnants of a storm that has passed, and then begins to hint at the light that is coming to bring us a new day.  The opening illustrates the passing unrest and gives way to a bouncy theme that conjures imagery of dancing light. A thoughtful middle section reminds the listener that uncluttered days are never a given or soon forgotten. But, hope does return with the theme to round out the ending of the piece. Techniques such as singing bell, suspended bells with mallets, thumb damp and LV are incorporated.
