I have thought of it in four sections: the procession and ceremony; the music and acclamations; the weight of duty; his care for the environment and Youth, and I give each its own musical style. For the first part of the refrain, the baritone soloist uses the same do, re ,me, fa, each time in a different order: the second part uses the same music every time. Paradise Lost by The English poet John Milton is an epic poem, retelling the tale of the Fall of Mankind – the moment when Eve was enticed by Satan to eat the forbidden fruit from the Tree of Knowledge and then tempted Adam to do the same, and as a result both were banished from the Garden of Eden. This song is Milton’s vision of Adam's rebuke of Eve for her big mistakes. I edited the passage to suit a more modern ear. Adam is sometimes very angry, and sometimes rude and sad at the same time. About 4 minutes.

Milton gives far more detail than Genesis. The song presents the story from Eve’s point of view. I edited the passages for scansion and to suit a modern ear, and ended up with lyrics that fall into three sections: Eve's feelings of shame and guilt, her overhearing the sentence, and her realisation of what she will lose. Extracts from a letter Beethoven wrote to his friend Carl Amenda, in 1799, in which he first confessed about the loss of his hearing, and from the Heiligenstadt Testament, a letter Beethoven wrote to his brothers in 1802. In the latter 1100-word document he writes of frustration with his growing hearing problem, at the same time attributing his gradual withdrawal from society to this illness. In the letter he also plays with the idea of suicide. He never posted it or showed it to anyone. Beethoven was quoted as saying the opening motif of his Fifth Symphony is the sound of Fate knocking at the door.� I felt it appropriate to quote this in my piece. Intermediate. 5 minutes.
