Composed by Paul Addison, Marian Kurzdorfer, and Karen Kurzdorfer. Arranged by Paul Addison. Children,Religious. Score. 59 pages. Paul Addison #862749. Published by Paul Addison (A0.1270338).

This musical tells a story of what life might have been like for Jesus at the age of 12. He learns lessons from the scriptures in synagogue school, including the Creation, the Ten Commandments, and the stories of Samson and David. He has dinner with his family, and his sisters ask about the role of women in the home and  in the culture. He discusses learning a trade with his father Joseph. Then the family takes a trip to Jerusalem for the Passover feast, and it is there that Jesus talks with the rabbis and scholars about the deeper meaning of the scriptures. They ask, “Who is this boy?â€, to which the women reply, “His name is Jesusâ€.

The songs are at an easy level, mostly with single-line melodies. There is one rap song, “Rabbi’s Rapâ€, which could be accompanied by a beat-box sound. There is also a medley, “Who Is This Boy? / His Name is Jesusâ€, in which the scholars and teachers sing two verses, the women’s chorus sings two verses, and then they sing together.

The musical runs about 40 minutes.

Composed by Philip Seward. 21st Century,Broadway,Chamber,Contemporary,Musical/Show,Opera. Score. 79 pages. Music Anon #938378. Published by Music Anon (A0.1353635).

Music by Philip Seward • Libretti by Joan Mazzonelli & Philip Seward

This volume offers four scenes for women singers for use in opera scene study and performance. There are a wide range of characters represented and various musical styles. The first is from High Fidelity which has been adapted from Anton Chekhov’s The Bear and George Bernard Shaw’s How He Lied to Her Husband. There are also references to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Cosí fan tutte later in the score. In this opening scene, Aurora Wentworth is practicing the mourning she believes society expects of her while her cousin, Georgina, from Milwaukee arrives to spice up the summer morning.

The second scene from Dorabella’s Daughters finds Anabella trapped in a woodsman’s cottage the day after her wedding. The opera opens at the wedding reception for her stepsister Cinderella where Annabella is particularly spiteful. In a fury, she marries the next man who walks in the room — as it happens,  a woodsman — or so she thinks. In this scene she is mourning her fate. Her younger sister, Brendella comes to visit and the two are joined later by their very happy stepsister, Cinderella.

The third scene from The Passion of John presents three women with their own perspectives on Jesus in this stylized presentation of the Gospel of John. The first singer offers the perspective of the gospel, the second presents a firsthand narrative of the Samaritan woman and the third is the woman who was accused of adultery. All three are accompanied by a women’s choral ensemble, flute, classical guitar and cello.

The final scene in this collection comes from The Proposal. The opera is composed as two loosely joined acts where the first is sung by four women and the second by three men. The action concerns the aftermath of a proposal of marriage where the woman, Eve, asks for time to consider. The unexpected response sends Sam into a bit of a tailspin. In this scene, from the end of the first act Eve is arguing with three versions of herself in the middle of the night: the romantic, the maternal and the one focused on career. The scene opens right after Eve-Romantic has just waxed poetic about the perfect fairytale romance.

By Helga Ragnars and Knut Rygnestad. By Guðfinna Jónsdóttir and Knut Rygnestad. Classical,Contemporary,Folk. Score. 60 pages. Knut Olav Rygnestad #844518. Published by Knut Olav Rygnestad (A0.1250185).

This morning your being woke
In knowledge of your heart’s loss
As the night had no dreams
But only a thousand falling stars.
Then the richness of a busy day
Seemed to you the work of evil witches.

– Guðfinna Jónsdóttir from Hömrum (1899–1946)

This quote, taken from the poem “The Golden Momentâ€, showcases some of Guðfinna’s writing’s distinct qualities: Profound sadness with a layer of beauty, and a juxtaposition of the mundane and the colloquial with grand imagery and the supernatural. Throughout her poetry we see these strong contrasts: A once-upon-a-lifetime moment that passes you by, but also the infinite beauty of a new-born baby. The wild Icelandic nature presented metaphorically like a protective Viking ship, but also great evil hiding under a sweet, romantic exterior. The life-long journey to a place of great beauty that was always inside you, yet also man’s desperate and futile attempts to bend a great mountain to their will. Her colourful and imaginative writing evokes the dramatic landscapes of her homeland in careful detail, as we’re presented with situations that carry both the great beauty and danger that the volcanic island holds.

Guðfinna lived most of her life in Northern Iceland, working as a church musician and writing beautiful texts that unfortunately never made it outside of her native country during her lifetime. We get some small hints about her personal life through her poetry, such as the tragic and early death of her sister Hulda, who died from tuberculosis shortly after getting engaged.

Helga Ragnars, being from the same town as Guðfinna and already familiar with her poetry, introduced Knut Rygnestad to it in 2019, after he expressed interest in writing settings of little-known poetry by women. The first two she sent were “Hið gullna augnablik†and “Tvær systurâ€, and Knut found these a joy to work with and quickly requested more, eventually leading to nine songs in total. With funding from Hljóðritasjóður Rannís and the Norwegian Arts Council, they were able to record and release these songs in 2023, and hope that this will help to make Guðfinna’s poetry reach a wider audience.

This book contains sheet music for nine songs:

  • Hið gullna augnablik
  • Vöggubarnsins maÌl
  • AÌfangastaður
  • Tvær systur
  • LjoÌssins knörr
  • Hver ert þuÌ
