Bach’s famous chorale, Sheep May Safely Graze from his Cantata No. 208 as the accompaniment in the same way that Charles Goundo’s setting of his Ave Maria uses Bach’s Prelude No. 1 from the Well Tempered Clavier. The added melody is interwoven within the fabric of Bach’s music which makes a wonderful backdrop to this well known and well loved Psalm. I have included an accompaniment for organ or piano. However, if you have any other instrumental arrangement that remains faithful to Bach’s setting feel free to use it with my setting of Psalm 23.

In 1862 in England, Jane Montgomery Campbell translated the original German poem by Matthias Clauduis into English. She translated Wir pflÑŒgen und wir streuen into English as We Plough the Fields and Scatter. The hymn was later published in Charles Bere's Garland of Songs and Children's Chorale Book. And Stephen Schwartz used these lyrics for his setting that was used in GODSPELL.
