Composed by Arthur Breur. Pop,Rock. Score. 8 pages. Floating Home Music #4780747. Published by Floating Home Music (A0.913979).

This piece was commissioned by Annette Saarinen for her granddaughter Aurora, who happens to be studying chemistry (among other things) so she can pursue her goals of working on environmental restoration.

Composing a song that is a gift for a friend's granddaughter is fraught with a number of perils, particularly when one of the inspirations is that the recipient of the song likes Adele tunes. Adele's songs are mostly romantic songs about lost or unrequited love, so the lyrics couldn't really come across as being FROM the grandmother.

Knowing that Aurora is studying chemistry, however, gave me a clue as to how I could make the piece work nicely: make it sound like a love song about the chemistry between two people, when in fact, the lyrics are talking about how our use of chemistry is both responsible for the state of our environment and the means we must use to fix it.

I did use my usual trick of starting with words or names, and have composed both Aurora and Chemistry into the notes of the piece, the former in the accompaniment, and the latter as the foundation for the verse melody.

Duration: 3m54s.

New for 2023 a very moving tribute to our Armed Forces, perfect for any celebration such as Armed Forces Day, Remembrance Day, ANZAC Day or Veterans Day. This song is in the form of an unsent letter from an unknown soldier to his/her daughter, attempting to explain their internal and external battles but declaring that their sacrifice was meaningful as it allowed the daughter (and us) to have a life of bliss...and that they would do it again. SKU: A0.1435663

Composed by Irish Traditional. Arranged by Konrad Harley. Celtic,Folk,Irish. Score. 4 pages. Konrad Harley #1015752. Published by Konrad Harley (A0.1435663).

Based on the traditional Irish tune Lough Sheeling and words from The Irish Minstrel (Edinburgh: Robert Purdie, 1825), p. 10. Arranged with a new piano accompaniment by Konrad Harley (1986-), 2024.

Lyrics:
1. Adieu, my lov'd Harp! for no more shall the vale
Re-echo thy notes as they float on the gale;
No more melting pity shall sigh o'er thy string,
Or love to thy tremblings so tenderly sing.

2. When battle's fell strife launch'd its thunders afar,
And valour's dark brow wore the honours of war,
'Twas thou breath'd the fame of the hero around,
And young emulation was wak'd by the sound.

3. Ye daughters of Erin, soon comes the sad day
When over the turf where I sleep, ye shall say--
“Oh! still is the song we repaid with a tear,
And silent the string that delighted the ear.”.

Composed by B.F.White. Arranged by Leonora Hardy. Christian,Easter,Sacred. Score. 2 pages. Leonora Hardy #6373439. Published by Leonora Hardy (A0.776913).

This is the tune used in several hymns including Lord, Whose Love Through Humble Service, Come, All Christians be Committed, and Wash, O God, Our Sons and Daughters. It is an easily learned arrangement for the church pianist who wants to have a more flowing style of music to accompany congregational singing. To that end, the melody is retained, as well as traditional timing to help singers even if a song leader is not present. It is also suitable for preludes, offertories or communion. Lyrics are not included because they are under copyright. Early intermediate or Intermediate level. Right hand melody. Hymn. Guitar chords

Most Importantly, Loves (2021) by Adrienne Inglis (ASCAP), as a six-song cycle for soprano and piano
Text — six letters by Maureen Broy Papovich
Duration 25:00
Difficulty 4 intermediate/advanced

Program note — Most Importantly, Loves (2021), a song cycle for soprano and piano composed by Adrienne Inglis (ASCAP), was commissioned by Maureen Broy Papovich whose six letters furnish the text. She wrote letters to various close family members with tender messages overflowing with admiration, affection, and hope. The songs look at each beloved relative as seen through the prism of the author’s caring eyes and heart. Rooted in moody Dorian mode, the lyrical melodies of R. J. overlay a more brooding, restless piano part. Lucy sports a bit of a jazzy lilt and sassy attitude. The infectious laugh of Camryn and the remarkable resemblance to her late father underpin this quick syncopated C major number. Brendan reflects his exuberant love of life and devastating self-destructive addiction with radical tonality and tempo changes. Mira has an encouraging message for a young person in D mixolydian with soothing piano texture. Jonah’s long lines soar over lush expansive harmonies grounded in B flat major to form a soft fleece blanket of comforting sound and boundless unconditional parental love. — Adrienne Inglis

The impetus for the poems that became the song cycle “Most Importantly Loves†started a decade ago. My brother died suddenly in 2011 at the age of 42. He left all of us behind including his daughters, my nieces, when they were ages six years and six months. My father and mother died a short time later, within months of each other in 2013 and 2014. Finally, in 2017 my 27-year-old nephew died of a drug overdose. This intense period of loss brought and continues to bring about many feelings of regret in addition to so much more. When my nephew died, my son Jonah, developed an intense anxiety about losing us, his parents. I felt compelled to express my feelings, the fear of my own mortality, the anxiety of leaving behind loved ones, combined with words said and unsaid to those lost. “Love letters†is my gift to the six young people I care most about. These songs, exquisitely set to music by my friend and composer Adrienne Inglis, express my deep love for each of my loved ones and also, hopefully, provide them with a piece of writing that they can use as a source of strength when life becomes particularly challenging. —  Maureen Broy Papovich

Composed by Philip Seward. 21st Century,Broadway,Chamber,Contemporary,Musical/Show,Opera. Score. 79 pages. Music Anon #938378. Published by Music Anon (A0.1353635).

Music by Philip Seward • Libretti by Joan Mazzonelli & Philip Seward

This volume offers four scenes for women singers for use in opera scene study and performance. There are a wide range of characters represented and various musical styles. The first is from High Fidelity which has been adapted from Anton Chekhov’s The Bear and George Bernard Shaw’s How He Lied to Her Husband. There are also references to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Cosí fan tutte later in the score. In this opening scene, Aurora Wentworth is practicing the mourning she believes society expects of her while her cousin, Georgina, from Milwaukee arrives to spice up the summer morning.

The second scene from Dorabella’s Daughters finds Anabella trapped in a woodsman’s cottage the day after her wedding. The opera opens at the wedding reception for her stepsister Cinderella where Annabella is particularly spiteful. In a fury, she marries the next man who walks in the room — as it happens,  a woodsman — or so she thinks. In this scene she is mourning her fate. Her younger sister, Brendella comes to visit and the two are joined later by their very happy stepsister, Cinderella.

The third scene from The Passion of John presents three women with their own perspectives on Jesus in this stylized presentation of the Gospel of John. The first singer offers the perspective of the gospel, the second presents a firsthand narrative of the Samaritan woman and the third is the woman who was accused of adultery. All three are accompanied by a women’s choral ensemble, flute, classical guitar and cello.

The final scene in this collection comes from The Proposal. The opera is composed as two loosely joined acts where the first is sung by four women and the second by three men. The action concerns the aftermath of a proposal of marriage where the woman, Eve, asks for time to consider. The unexpected response sends Sam into a bit of a tailspin. In this scene, from the end of the first act Eve is arguing with three versions of herself in the middle of the night: the romantic, the maternal and the one focused on career. The scene opens right after Eve-Romantic has just waxed poetic about the perfect fairytale romance.
