This is Devotion #1 of Three Devotions for Voice and Piano.  This music soars and swoops in a most engaging way, taking the listener on a most pleasant journey.  The voice and piano weave and flow with the lyrics. Since this is the lightest in emotional scope and lyric content of the three, this  composition can also cross over to a musical theater type style. The lyrics can be interpreted in various ways by the listener and performer.  Composer, Joan Bujacich set the music to images of mainly birds flying about freely over various landscapes. (Video available on Youtube) The music can be purchased as a solo or  as a collection with the other two Devotions. Kathy Knittel, mezzo soprano, and Joan Bujacich have recorded all Three Devotions for Voice and Piano and Ms. Bujacich has set each Devotion to images in video form. .

Here is the full piano vocal version of “The Leaves Around Me Falling�, as heard on my YouTube channel and in many comforting, beautiful funeral playlists. This version is in E minor to make it easier to play, and has the exact piano accompaniment as well as full melody and lyrics for a soloist or choir. It works well as a solo or congregational song for any autumn or funeral service, featuring the meaningful lyrics of Henry Francis Lyte reminding us of the swiftness of this life, and the hope we have for the life beyond. Also included at the end of the file is a separate printout of both the piano and vocal parts separately for ease of practice and rehearsal.

The original hymn was very beautiful but I thought a minor setting would be more fitting for the solemn lyrics, so I wrote an entirely new melody and harmonic arrangement, which can be found on all streaming platforms as well as Youtube, where lyric videos of this and other songs are readily available for church or personal use. 

Not just a hymn for September and October, I've found myself going back to this song often, as it captures the rich beauty and yet sadness of the autumn season, and still somehow brings comfort amidst the fast-changing seasons of the earth and of our lives. I hope you also are blessed by this song and arrangement!

George Brandon: Two Dream Poems (2020) for Soprano and Piano This piece consists of musical settings of two 20th century poems concerning the dream state: one by the American poet Gary Snyder; the other by Mavash Sabet from Iran. Gary Snyder’s poem, “Maudgalyayana Saw Hell�, is a complex and multilayered portrayal of a passage through the dream state, beginning with falling asleep and ending with waking up. At the same time as it describes a mythical journey and an inward psychological journey, it also presents a Buddhist metaphysical perspective in which the whole of life, and our ordinary sense of reality, appear and are questioned as dream states as well. At the time that Mavash Sabet wrote her poem “Hello Again� she was a political prisoner sentenced to twenty years in prison for her religious and educational activities. on behalf of the Bahai faith, a religion which is persecuted by Iran's theocratic government. “Hello Again�, from her book Prison Poems, describes a dream experience that renewed her inner sense of freedom despite being incarcerated, and provided her with strength and hope for the future. Complex but singable, intense and lyrical, these compelling songs will make a great impact in a concert or recital program. Duration: approximately 9 mins. Advanced.
