By Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. By A.P. Carter. Arranged by Cascia Talbert. Christian,Country. Score. 24 pages. Cascia Talbert #996710. Published by Cascia Talbert (A0.1414977).

Can the Circle Be Unbroken (By and By) is a country/folk song reworked by A. P. Carter from the hymn Will the Circle Be Unbroken? by Ada R. Habershon and Charles H. Gabriel. The song's lyrics concern the death, funeral, and mourning of the narrator's mother.

The song first gained attention due to the Carter Family. The song has been recorded by many groups and musicians: Blind James Campbell, Bob Dylan, The Band, The Staple Singers, Clara Ward Singers, John Fahey, Roy Acuff, Joan Baez, The Chieftains, Jerry Lee Lewis, Gene Vincent, Ralph Stanley, The Black Crowes, Kristin Hersh, John Lee Hooker, Bill Monroe, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Pentangle, Spacemen 3, Country Joe McDonald, John Statz, Spirit of the West with The Wonder Stuff, Mavis Staples, The Felice Brothers, Johnny Cash, Gregg Allman, the Neville Brothers, Jeff Buckley, Moby, and Agnes Chan. Its refrain was incorporated into the Carl Perkins song Daddy Sang Bass and the Atlanta song Sweet Country Music. It is primarily performed in gospel, bluegrass and folk, but versions in other genres exist. Most versions of the song use the alternate title Will the Circle Be Unbroken. In 1998, it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

This arrangement is for flute, voice and piano.

Composed by Julián De La Chica. Classical,Opera,Spiritual. Score. 56 pages. Vagabundo Music Publishing #782045. Published by Vagabundo Music Publishing (A0.1182309).

MUSIC NOTES:

How does Julián De La Chica materialize the question of “being†in sound? Through text and music as sound material: the choice of the German tongue as a philosophic language; in its sonority, the reference to the tradition of Lieder, a form where word and sound construct a system of meanings in search of the essential. Materializing it through sound, the works achieve this “concentration†of the essential, guided by the question of the “being.â€

But, how do they achieve it? Long phrases, almost Gregorian rhythmicity, recuperate the capacity for enunciation born of medieval liturgical chant and Buddhist mantras. The concentration of power in the invoked words – to enunciate is to make real what is invoked. The essence is enunciated in the concept, in the construction of the enunciations that constitute the exoskeleton of these songs. The sound materializes the concept; it is sound that creates reality. The sound is in the center of the congealed hurricane. A person that asks the question of “beingâ€, stops time. Their presence is now; only the now exists. That instant is nonetheless a whirlwind that in the meditative act stops in front of the asking person and contemplates their mortal state, unappealable: the state of mortality as illumination.

Composed by Thomas Campbell / Charles Wesley. Arranged by Leonora Hardy. Christian,Easter,Religious,Sacred. Score. 5 pages. Leonora Hardy #776943. Published by Leonora Hardy (A0.1176863).

This arrangement is designed to be used either as congregational accompaniment or as a piano solo. I have made some minor adjustments to the version in most hymnals, but they do not deviate much from the standard. I used the last part of the first verse as a special ending which could be sung a capella. Melody is carried in the right hand. There are actually 5 verses but I have included in the vocal line only the first and fourth because they are most meaningful to me. The other verses are on the final page. This song is appropriate for almost any time in the Christian year but particularly during Lent and for Ash Wednesday or Maunday Thursday services. Leonorahardy@gmail.com.
