Debussy's Trois Chansons de Bilitis was one of the works we studied in a seminar taught by Professor Earl Kim when I was a graduate student at Harvard University, 1977 to 1981. I then recently discovered that Debussy took twelve of the 158 poems from Pierre Louÿs' Les Chansons de Bilitis and wrote Musique de scéne pour les chansons de bilitis.' The texts in this version is not sung but recited by a narrator accompanied by two flutes, two harps and celesta. Looking for something to set for my next song cycle I rediscovered Christina via his brother, the poet and painter, Dante Gabriel Rossetti. IMHO, he is much more brilliant as a painter, and his sister is the true genius poet!!! Christina's father emigrated to England from Italy in 1824. Consequently, all four children (Maria, Dante, William and Christina) spoke Italian at home when they were young. To my delight many of Christina's early poems are in Italian. I was so taken by this work for mezzo-soprano and string quartet that I did my own version of the Shelley-Ascoli text for soprano and piano, also called Il Tramonto. In the meanwhile, I found at an antique bookstore online a first edition copy of Poesie di P. B. Shelley (Milano Fratelli Treves, Editori, 1905) with more translations into Italian by Roberto Ascoli. The Italian versions are so much more beautiful than the English that I was compelled to create another song cycle of some of these poems in Italian for soprano and piano. I. Canto II. Versi III. According to Wikipedia, it is a book of his culinary reminiscences and reflections on the craft and science of cookery and the art of eating. Incidentally, the cheese Brillat-Savarin is named after him. I am a foodie and I have written quite a few works whose subjects are food related. My magnum food opus is Apicus de re Coquinaria (2023). Program note.  I am a foodie.  I love all kinds of food.  I especially relish the experience of trying new dishes found at cutting-edge restaurants.  But I am also a fan of traditional cooking at a local trattoria or bistro.   I also love to cook in my own kitchen, for family and friends.  I used to make Chinese food, but after spending a year in Italy as a Fellow at the American Academy in Rome, 1986-87, I became a convert to Italian cuisine.   These days I basically only cook Italian.  My teachers are Marcella Hazan, Lidia Bastianich, and the ubiquitous 60-Minute Gourmet author, Pierre Franey.  So when I recently came upon this ancient cookbook, De re coquinaria by Marcus Gavius Apicius, AD 14-37, I immediately thought I would set the recipes from the book into a song cycle for tenor and piano.There are ten chapters in the book.  But there is a dispute as to whether Books IX and X were written by someone else other than Apicius.  With that in mind, I am only setting recipes from the first eight books, or chapters.I.
