This Sermon song for soloist and quartet was inspired by two sermons on September 3 and September 10, 2023  by Dr. Paul de Jong at First Presbyterian Church Fort Myers,  Florida. It is based on Mark chapter  4 and it defines what parables are and how that was the way in which Christ spoke to the masses. He spoke to the disciples directly.  The music is lively with three solo verses and quartet choruses to follow.  The piano accompaniment is jazzy and the whole piece comes across like a Negro  spiritual.

This sermon song is based on part of a sermon preached by Dr. Paul de Jong at First Presbyterian Church, Fort Myers, Florida on September 24, 2023 based on the text of Mark 5: 21-6:6.  It tells the story in an old Gospel style of the woman who had an uncurable flow of blood for 12 years with no help from doctors forcing her to sell all that she had.  But when Jesus came to town, she touched his garment, admitted it was she and by her faith she was healed.  Pastor Paul told of an experience he had with a perisioner who was very ill, but who clutched the sheets of her bed be imagining it was her savior's garment's hem.  This sermon song is meant to be both educational and inspirational.

Sweetly Sang the Donkey is a sermon song from the Palm Sunday Sermon  2024 of Dr. Paul de Jong at First Presbyterian Church Fort Myers Florida.  The text is found in each of the four gospels, but on this day the sermon was from Mark 11:1-11 and the donkey was stressed.  In my mind, I thought of the children's song Sweetly Sings the Donkey and I extended it with bits of The Eentsy Weentsy Spider.  Of course it had to be in the key of Dmajor,  The bass provided consists of only two chords: Dmajor and Amajor7.  It tells the story of the procession on Palm Sunday and  like Balaam's donkey, the doneky carrying Jesus is given the gift of speaking. It contrasts the crowds that on Sunday wave Palms branches and  later in the week wave their fists demanding the crucifiction of Jesus.  It brings in the interesting note that Solomon, son of David, also rode a donkey.  This is a fun children's choir song with a very deep message.
