This arrangement of J. S. Bach's chorale from Cantata #147 is especially appropriate for Holy Week, specifically Maundy Thursday or Good Friday, with original lyrics speaking of St. Peter's denial: Ere the morning rooster cried, I my Savior thrice denied. The passion of the story is enhanced by setting the traditional melody against an accompaniment retaining the classical style of the familiar but shifted primarily to the relative minor key.

Mermaid in the Jar is the first short chamber opera in the Wild Beast of the Bungalow triptych (Mermaid in the Jar, Prairie Dogs, and Fine and Dandy), which takes place entirely within an eleven-year-old Girl’s bedroom as she overhears her parents’ volatile conversations. Over the course of a few days, a mermaid, a family of stuffed prairie dogs, and singing groups of chickenpox and shingles force her to confront what it means to care for others and be cared for herself.

Based on Georg Philip Telemann’s cantata, Der Schulmeister, with additional music, libretto, and singing translation by Rachel J. Peters, Lesson Plan brings an international opera star Alice Tommasso awkwardly into teaching online after a scheduling faux pas while live engagements are paused. Intercepted by an overwhelmed school administrator/amateur choir director, the pair clash over technique and the meaning of art. At this point, Alice wonders if her only remaining choices are to teach dilettantes forever or to leave the profession entirely. Alice publicly reveals--in a plaintive deconstruction of Mozart’s famously difficult “Queen of the Night� star turn--what stymies her most: there is simply no way to compress and convey the experience of a hard-won opera singing career in an hour-long class.

Aria for dramatic soprano from the opera Three Amputators

Three Amputators is an opera-in-progress after the story “The Three Army Surgeons” by the Brothers Grimm. The opera tells of three travelling doctors who seek lodging for a night, offering the establishment’s innkeeper a demonstration of their unbelievable skills: they can cut out parts of their own bodies only to reattach them later with the aid of a proprietary salve.  After one removes a hand, another their heart, and the third their eyeballs, an enigmatic cat appears on the scene to dine on the flesh and throw the course of the story into disarray. This is a contemporary interpretation of one of the Grimm’s most eccentric of tales. The character of the insatiable Cat is inspired by our national hero, Fran Lebowitz.
