This work is originally for medium voice and chamber orchestra and consists of six songs. The song texts deal with a young girl's experiences of growing up in the rural South. The mp3 excerpt is song #6, Crossroads Store, a favorite hangout of the locals. This song is almost a catalog aria of the contents and aura of such a place. The orchestral parts are available from the composer. Duration is ca. 27 minutes for the entire set.

Program note.  

Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin (1755-1826) was a man of many things: lawyer, judge, Mayor of Belley, author and professional violinist. He is most famous for his book, Physiologie du goût (The Physiology of Taste). According to Wikipedia, it is a book of his culinary reminiscences and reflections on the craft and science of cookery and the art of eating. Incidentally, the cheese Brillat-Savarin is named after him. 

I am a foodie and I have written quite a few works whose subjects are food related. My magnum food opus is Apicus de re Coquinaria (2023). So, it is inevitable that I would want to do a song cycle with texts excerpted from Goût.

18 Songs from Chinese Poets of the Yang Dynasty.  These poems have been set to English verse by Kenneth L. Patton.
These were originally composed for guitar accompaniment, and the piano part has been written to maintain the simplicity of the guitar part.
The poems are all fairly short and maintain of the original Chinese style.  They cover topics about Nature, Friendship, and Reflections on Life.
No attempt has been made to imitate Oriental music - just the simplicity of the poems themselves.

I've always wanted to arrange and perform this song for flute. I took the iconic fiddle solo and created my own version on flute.
