This year (2019) marks the 50th anniversary of the most iconic music festival ever, Woodstock. Three days of love, peace and music August 15-18 (actually lasted 3 and 1/2 days) on Max Yasgur's farm in New York.There is a plan to have a celebration to mark the occasion. To commemorate this occasion, this is the first of many arrangements of the iconic songs of the festival that I plan to write. Whenever possible I will use the actually Woodstock recordings as the arrangement. This beautiful song by John Sebastian is the first song on the Woodstock Soundtrack triple album. John was the 4th performer on the second day. This is the third song in his set (according to Wikipedia). It is a simple song that epitomizes the folk music of the time as well as the festival itself. Duration = 2:35. Three Housman settings volume 111 for Mezzo Soprano and Piano was composed in 2017 They are part of a series of settings of Housman poems by David now numbering Three Volumes with another four volumes in the planning stage.

The poems set are When I watch the Living Meet, I Wake from Dreams and Turning, and There Pass the Careless People.

Review.

It is important to note that David songs, while rooted in the older art song tradition, make use of the sophisticated compositional techniques of the 20th and 21st centuries. David has an ability to make complicated melodic lines that hint but do not venture into atonality, sound simple and beautiful. He can use the accompaniment as a form of tone painting in a way that seems perfectly natural.
