This is the first publication of a new Christmas song, set for baritone and piano. The words are those of a poem by Leonard Clark (1905 – 1981), an English poet who was raised in The Forest of Dean, in the west of England. In 1972 he published a slim little book of Christmas poems, of which ‘Singing in the Streets’ is one, surely one of the most appealing of Christmas poems. It gives its name to the book. The poem tells of an older man revisiting the village of his boyhood, and wondering whether, somehow, the streets still hold the sound of the carols that he and the other boys and girls sang there. It begins: ‘I had almost forgotten the singing in the streets,Snow piled up by the houses, drifting Underneath the door into the warm room, …’ It is very evocative of that time and of the magic that Christmas always holds for children. Drawn from the same book of poems there is available another new Christmas song, called The Birth; that one is set in two versions, one for voice and piano and the other for SATB a cappella. Ian Calvert.

It starts with the poet waking in the pre-dawn. He then realizes that it is Christmas Day and in the stillness of that time his mind turns to the birth of Jesus, as traditionally told. Then he steps out of time and space and looks through his bedroom window to contemplate the mystery of incarnation. And he finishes at the stable, offering devotion to the newborn Lord. This song is also available in a version for SATB a cappella. Drawn from the same book of poems there is available another new Christmas song, called Singing in the Streets; that one is set for baritone and piano. Ian Calvert.

There, walking the streets, he saw a poster announcing a vocal recital in what he describes as “a very old chapel,� and which was the first public concert he saw since the beginning of the pandemic. “Maybe it was the ambience of the chapel, the city, and the Italian arias that gave me inspiration for the cycle,� he says. And the Poemas de bar became a model for the new music. “Because the Poemas were conversations in a bar, �De La Chica explains, “I decided to capture everyday conversations in Florence. I ‘stole’ some stories—for example, when I was on line to buy tickets for the Campanile, or in a coffee shop,� he would note bits of conversations he overheard. He tells one story about this: “I still remember around 2 a.m., there was one guy sitting on a bridge over the Arno.
