Unfortunately he did not, but in the process of my research I stumbled upon Cesare Pavese, 1908-1950. To know a bit more about this person, I contacted my Italian colleague, Giorgio Rimondi, who is a professor in Ferrara, Italy. Giorgio gave me a nice summary of Pavese's life and work. So I went on Amazon and bought a bilingual book of his poems: Disaffections. The poems that intrigued me the most were the ones he wrote for his paramour, the American model and actress, Constance Dowling. The last poem he wrote before he committed suicide at the age of 41 was dedicated to her: Death will come and will have your eyes. I chose that poem as the anchor of a set of eight poems for the song cycle. 1. Last blues, to be read some day*** NB: Two of the poems with *** are originally in English. I thought an English setting within a song cycle that is Italian would be a bit jarring. So I asked my friend Giorgio if he could make me an Italian version of the poems. He instead informed me that Italo Calvino had already made a literal translation of those two English poems. So I picked up his Collected Poems in English and French and there I discovered several lovely poems by Paul Éluard, 1895-1952. This led me down the rabbit hole of seeking out Éluard's poems, and there are tons of it.I was especially intrigued by the collection called Mourir de ne pas mourir - Dying of not dying!!! The Windmills of Your Mind is a song with music by French composer Michel Legrand and English lyrics written by Americans Alan and Marilyn Bergman. The French lyrics, under the title Les Moulins de mon cœur, were written by Eddy Marnay. A single by Noel Harrison from the album The Thomas Crown Affair was released in 1968. The song (with the English lyrics) was introduced in the film The Thomas Crown Affair in 1968 and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. This version features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements. We kept the left-hand very simple because the strong melody carries this song quite well. I was so taken by this work for mezzo-soprano and string quartet that I did my own version of the Shelley-Ascoli text for soprano and piano, also called Il Tramonto. In the meanwhile, I found at an antique bookstore online a first edition copy of Poesie di P. B. Shelley (Milano Fratelli Treves, Editori, 1905) with more translations into Italian by Roberto Ascoli. The Italian versions are so much more beautiful than the English that I was compelled to create another song cycle of some of these poems in Italian for soprano and piano. I. Canto II. Versi III.
