Composed by Alan Edgar, John Milton. 20th Century,Chamber,Christian,Religious. Score. 12 pages. Alan Edgar Ted Moon #734549. Published by Alan Edgar Ted Moon (A0.1134455).

EVE’S PARADISE LOST Soprano (C up to G#), Pianoforte (also available with string quartet or reed quartet: oboes, clarinet, bassoon. Paradise Lost by The English poet John Milton is an epic occupying twelve books. It retells the tale of the Fall of Mankind – the moment when Adam and Eve were enticed by Satan to eat the forbidden fruit from the Tree of Knowledge, and as a result were banished from the Garden of Eden. Milton gives far more detail than Genesis. The song presents the story from Eve’s point of view. I edited the passages for scansion and to suit a modern ear, and ended up with lyrics that fall into three sections: Eve's feelings of shame and guilt, her overhearing the sentence, and her realisation of what she will lose. Octatonic and pentatonic modes. Many quartals. Intermediate. 6 minutes.

By Mark Rowlinson (Baritone) and Peter Lawson (piano). By David Warin Solomons. Christmas,Contemporary. Score. 4 pages. David Warin Solomons #1004211. Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.1422856).

Haikus by Canon Albert Radcliffe (who was canon at Manchester Cathedral) and asked me to set them. The music is unusual for vocal works in that it uses the octatonic mode, but this seemed particularly appropriate for the unusual angle which Canon Albert takes on the Christmas story.

I said to the snow,
Show me what you know of God.
Brightness blinded me.

To the stars I said,
Speak then from a gentler light.
Their word was silence.

I called to the wind,
Whis-per the glory of God.
Its breath took my breath.

I asked the holly
What do you know of his love?
Her thorns drew my blood.

By Andre Kostelanetz. By Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein. Arranged by Dave Gingras and John E. Dosher. Broadway,Film/TV,Jazz,Musical/Show. Score. 2 pages. DAVID LEE GINGRAS #1040383. Published by DAVID LEE GINGRAS (A0.1461639).

I've Told Every Little Star is a 1932 composition by Jerome Kern with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein from the musical Music In the Air. Unfortunately, it suffers from many poor performances, particularly the awful Linda Scott 1961 hatchet job which changed both the melody and words to attract a teenage audience. The tune has a standard 32-bar AABA form. Many of the standard performances (Bing Crosby's, for example) use a simple set of changes in the A sections that stay close to the tonic; these are the original changes (as per the lead sheet in The Ultimate Fake Book). This version features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements. We also added some pretty cool left-hand fills for your listening (playing?) pleasure - we hope you like what we've done to make this arrangement unique!

Key/Tone: G Major
Movements/Sections: Andante
Difficulty: Grade 2/12 (Easy)
Obs.:This score presents the hymn Amazing Grace in an arrangement for Soprano with piano accompaniment. This piece is a Christian hymn about wonder and gratefulness.
The melody is pentatonic, and the lyrics were written in 1772 by John Newton, a former slave trader who had converted to Christianity. The hymn is about divine grace; it is based on 1 Chronicles 17:16-17, a prayer of King David in which he marvels at God's choosing him and his house. It's believed that Newton wrote this hymn for his 1773 New Year's Day sermon; he then entitled the piece Faith's Review and Expectations. This hymn conveys a powerful message and bears strong references to human rights and freedom.

SKU: A0.522222

Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Colin Kirkpatrick. Folk,Holiday. Score. 21 pages. Colin Kirkpatrick Publications #3913261. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.522222).

These folk song arrangements are written in the Welsh language. The vocal range is from Middle C to F on the top line of the staff. They are suitable for mezzo soprano and could also be sung by tenor voice an octave lower. They are among some of the most popular folk songs of Wales and sure to be well received at a vocal recital. They would also make excellent encore pieces. For copyright reasons, English translations are not provided, although some are to be found on various web pages.

1. Y Ddau Farch (The Two Mares)
The song tells the story of two horses. The older one tells the younger, “In my day I was as good a horse as youâ€. But when I became too old to work, I was sent away to the mountains. She vows never to return to her cruel owners. This is an example of a macaronic song in which the lyrics use more than one language.

2. Si Hei Lwli, ’Mabi (Sleep, my Lovely Baby)
In this pentatonic lullaby, a mother tells her child that their ship is moving away, the captain is on board, the eastern wind is blowing and the seagull is on its nest.

3. Canu Cwnsela (Wassail Song)
The singers ask permission to come in and sing for their dinner. But they seem to have chosen the wrong house because the reply is: “I have no dinner or money to spend, to give you a welcome tonight.†The melody is in the Dorian Mode.
4. Robin Ddiog (Lazy Robin)
The song, also in the Aeolian mode is about a robin whose little house is always tidy. “Open the door a little bit, so that I can see the sea and the waves†he asks. When the door is opened, the breeze sweeps away all the leaves from the floor.
5. Migildi Magildi
“When the smithy’s door is open, we can see the blacksmith working.†The song describes the sights and sounds of the blacksmith’s workshop. You can hear all the songs in the audio demo, though they are played by an oboe rather than sung.

SKU: A0.1033030

By DaCapo Primary Music. By John Ashton Thomas and Tracey Mathias. Contemporary. Score. 5 pages. DaCapo Primary Music #6015895. Published by DaCapo Primary Music (A0.1033030).

Celebration was the first commissioned piece written by John Ashton Thomas for DaCapo music. It is the opening number for Street Party but works very well as a stand alone piece for any celebration. It is a pentatonic song and is a part of the DaCapo repertoire which enables children to learn relative solfa with fun materials. It was written for the Big Lunch (Eden project supporting streets to have their own street parties) and was sung at Eden by school children, DaCapo's Fernando Ramirez and Barbara Winsor.

The piano reduction makes it accessible to many more choirs.

Performance note:
There is only one set of words and we suggest that you create a different version for each verse. Eg sing one verse in relative solfa with the Curwen hand signs; hum one verse; clap the rhythm only; sing a verse with an ostinato; play one verse on simple tuned percussion; use your own ideas.

This piece is approx 3mins and you can find more DaCapo pieces for Children’s Voices and piano accompaniment at
DaCapo Music Shop.
