It was published in 1934 by Santly Bros. This version features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements. West Virginia Hills is the oldest song composed in honor of the state of West Virginia. Words and music were written by Dr. D. B. Purinton in 1877, twelve years after West Virginia became a state. Purinton later became President of the West Virginia University (WVU). West Virginia Hills was first publicly performed by WVU seniors. Later, a similar song, The West Virginia Hills, was composed by H.E. Engle and Ellen King, and published in 1886. The West Virginia Hills is also available at SheetMusicPlus (arranged by Sandy McIntire). This arrangement is for voice with an easy piano accompaniment.  .

The West Virginia Hills is the oldest of four songs adopted by the legislature of West Virginia as a state song. It was composed by H.E. Engle to the lyrics of Ellen King in 1886 and is still sung by West Virginians at gatherings and home comings. This arrangement provides four verses and chorus with an easy piano accompaniment. The West Indian version of the Our Father (Lord's Prayer) has made its way, in numerous forms and arrangements, into many hymnals around the world.  My arrangement is derived from the way my own choir sang it at a church here in the West Indies.  I created an accompaniment in the local strum style with rhythmic triads in the RH and a walking bass line in the LH.  I have arranged it all into a very spirited and rhythmic prayer for Vocal Solo.
