♫ A theology that seems to be gaining ground in USA churches concentrates on getting blessings from God. Sadly this theology has caused splits and divisions in the body of Christ.
♫ A notable example of God's blessing a believer is the prosperity of Abraham. However, if you look closely at the text, Abraham is not given blessings for his own sake. Abraham is not to get a blessing, Abraham is to be a blessing!
♫ Jesus said “Seek first the Kingdom of God and its righteousness� and “all these things� (the necessities) of life will be added to you. Paul told the Philippians that as they had put God first in supplying Paul’s needs, “God will supply all your needs.�
♫ Any theology that represents the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament must wrestle with the concept of the righteous poor.
♫ This song celebrates the vast blessings that we enjoy in Christ, and harks back to concept of the seldom used gospel songs “Make Me a Blessing� and “Make Me a Channel of Blessing Today.�

A reflective setting for high voice and piano of the lovely anonymous text often called the Prayer of Saint Francis. There is, however, no evidence that St. Francis of Assisi wrote it. Its first appearance was in a spiritual magazine called La Clochette (The Little Bell), published in Paris in 1912. The prayer became well known and associated with the saint in the years following; the first printed English version appeared in a Quaker magazine in 1927. In this setting I took the liberty of adding two words (to ourselves) to the prayer, towards the end: ... for it is in dying to ourselves that we are born to eternal life. They fit quite naturally into the flow of the music and, I believe, are certainly in keeping with the teachings of St. Francis. For more information about John's work visit www.johnnewellmusic.com.

This original setting of the Lord's Prayer text is adapted from the III. of my Modern Wedding Canata which was a commission from the Oklahoma Music Teachers Association in 2000.  The cantata is written for two sopranos and piano (4-hand) as well as piccalo trumpet (I.) and jazz trio (IV.)  I have since adapted the III. for SATB as well as soprano solo to make it more accessible for church, memorial services and weddings!

This song is suitable for Thanksgiving gatherings and church services.  The repetitive accompaniment figure in the left hand serves as a good technical exercise for piano students.  The upper bass notes form a nice melodic line, which makes the left hand more interesting to play.  On the second page the right hand triplets and left hand ascending fourths and thirds add a nice contrast to the previous rhythmic patterns.
