Composed by Arthur Breur. Pop,Rock. Score. 8 pages. Floating Home Music #4780747. Published by Floating Home Music (A0.913979).

This piece was commissioned by Annette Saarinen for her granddaughter Aurora, who happens to be studying chemistry (among other things) so she can pursue her goals of working on environmental restoration.

Composing a song that is a gift for a friend's granddaughter is fraught with a number of perils, particularly when one of the inspirations is that the recipient of the song likes Adele tunes. Adele's songs are mostly romantic songs about lost or unrequited love, so the lyrics couldn't really come across as being FROM the grandmother.

Knowing that Aurora is studying chemistry, however, gave me a clue as to how I could make the piece work nicely: make it sound like a love song about the chemistry between two people, when in fact, the lyrics are talking about how our use of chemistry is both responsible for the state of our environment and the means we must use to fix it.

I did use my usual trick of starting with words or names, and have composed both Aurora and Chemistry into the notes of the piece, the former in the accompaniment, and the latter as the foundation for the verse melody.

Duration: 3m54s.

Composed by Robert J. Sherman. Arranged by Original Piano/Vocal Arrangement by Robert J. Sherman. Broadway,Instructional,Musical/Show. Score. 6 pages. Sherman Theatrical Entertainment Ltd. #165526. Published by Sherman Theatrical Entertainment Ltd. (A0.556054).

The Sharpest Smile is from the musical Love Birds. This song pays homage to “Honey Bun†from the classic 1949 Rodgers & Hammerstein musical: South Pacific. Like its forerunner, “The Sharpest Smile†represents a “show within a show†moment. Both “Honey Bun†and “The Sharpest Smile†derive their comedy from the age-old, vaudevillian gimmick of a girl pretending to be a boy and vice versa. In the context of the Love Birds script, “Vera†(a female parrot) is costumed as a 1920s (male) gangster talking to “his†gangster friends. “The Gangster†character explains that “he†has met a wonderful girl (named “Pearlâ€), so don’t expect to see “him†around as much; or lyrics to that effect. Later in the number, we learn that “Pearl†is in fact a hungry crocodile dressed in a lady’s bikini costume (i.e. two coconuts strung together for the top – also an homage to “Honey Bunâ€). Pearl constantly tries to take a bite out of the Gangster Parrot who is blissfully unaware of the threat. This is a comedy song about mismatched relationships, but it also serves as meta-commentary on the dangers that pursuing such relationships can pose. In other words, “Pearl†is “Peril†(at least according to the thinking of the time). Despite the implicit risk, this unconventional love story seems to work out in the end. When printing, please scale to fit for standard US Letter and A4 size.

Composed by Christopher Benfield. 20th Century,Concert,Contemporary. Score. 2 pages. Christopher Benfield #6202237. Published by Christopher Benfield (A0.909898).

Using five poems about words by Bo Burnham from his book Egghead, this collection of somewhat satirical songs is in the 12-tone serial aesthetic. Each song has a unique matrix, each of which is also included in this collection. In the words of the composer, each song is meant to focus more on the individual words that make up the poem that is supported by the music. This oddly fun collection is perfect for any recital or performance that has a contemporary or modern theme.

Three Little Words is a comedic song about the singer's anger with someone, talking about the things they could be, but they are not.

Composed by Glenn Miller. Arranged by Dave Gingras, John E. Dosher. Contemporary. Score. 2 pages. DAVID LEE GINGRAS #6102071. Published by DAVID LEE GINGRAS (A0.794081).

Moonlight Serenade is an American swing ballad composed by Glenn Miller with subsequent lyrics by Mitchell Parish. In 1991 Miller's recording of Moonlight Serenade was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. This version features a root-based chord-blocking technique that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements. We added a few left-hand fills to make it a little more interesting - not that it wasn't interesting enough, I mean we're talking Glen Miller here!
We hope you like this version!
