It’s one of the songs of harvest off of my album entitled “Hymns of Autumn�, but doesn’t talk about harvest in the traditional sense we normally sing about these days.Not many talk about the judgement of God in today’s church, and this hymn will send chills down the spine of the most devout believer as we realize the full spectrum of God's character, including His wrath and power on Judgement Day. I found this in an old hymnal that was so old that the “S�s were still written as “F�s, and I had to squint to read it while learning to sing for this recording. Personally, though I've had extensive training in the subject, I can't stand museum music. No matter how pretty or perfectly-played museum music is, it will always have an air of deadness about it. Before I arrived at mission age I had to make a lot of decisions about whether or not I wanted to go on a mission. There were so many voices calling out to me. The voices promised me scholarships and fame. The voices questioned my logic. The voices tried to make me doubt my motives and character. The voices ridiculed me and my desires to do good. The voices told me that they loved me, but wouldn't wait for me if I went on a mission. All of those voices were demeaning of me if I went on a mission. They also promised me joy, but only if I decided not to go on a mission. I ultimately decided to go on a mission. By going on a mission I was put in a situation where I could testify of God's gospel truths. Those people hearing the truths had the opportunity to pray to God to find out for themselves if what they had been taught was true. Those people that talked to God in prayer joined the church. Why? Because God answered their prayers. Some of those new members went on missions to other lands converting through the spirit of the Holy Ghost others, who in turn went on missions to other lands. The cycle continues. Just one person doing what he knows is right can set off a chain reaction for the good that will go on and on.

My colleague at North Lake College was an outstanding bass/baritone and a church choir director. He handed me a copy of Wesley's directions for singers...found in many old hymnals...and we both enjoyed good laughs at how accurate the words are to modern congregations. My song is a type of theater presentation...or a short cantata and portrays the contrasting emotions in the text. For example: Sing lustily and with good courage ...singing the songs of Satan! Will be a dramatic high point! But, Wesley's beautiful ending makes a great conclusion. Above all sing spiritually. Have and eye to God in every word you sing Directions requires a good pianist but the voice part doesn't require a huge range. Note: there is a Mezzo Soprano score enclosed.
