Composed by Fiona Hickie. Contemporary,Standards. Score. 7 pages. Fiona Alice Hickie #4853343. Published by Fiona Alice Hickie (A0.738138).

A song about loss of love and the devastation it causes to our lives.
Lyrics:

1.

My roots once clung to the earth,

The wind is calm the river still.

As if nothing else survives.

My world is empty, am I alive?

From my limbs a fruit was plucked,

Within its sheath my heart was tucked.

Its seeds contained my unknown future,

Inside a flesh so sweet and pure.

2.

Would my seeds find a place to fall?

Nice fertile ground so they'd grow tall.

Or would they find some barren ground.

Where no love or nurture can be found?

Without the fruit my limbs were bare.

An old tree nearby just stood and stared.

Why should it stop and help the tree

Who let its fruit be taken from thee.

3.

About the charmer who took the fruit?

Should he help to make them grow?

Instead he walked right off the land.

With barely a wave of his hand.

He bit the apple as he walked away.

Enjoying its flesh but did not stay.

No care at all for the damage heā€™d done

He took the heart from his loved one.

4.

So grow another fruit you say.

And yes that would be the logical way.

But some trees grow abundant fruit.

Small and nice without dispute.

Others instead grow one to perfection.

Round and sweet, on close inspection.

But once itā€™s gone then that is all.

Then no more shall ever fall.

5.

I sit here on the barren hill,

The wind is calm the river still.

As if nothing else survives.

The world is empty no soul survives.

'Cruising Down the Nile' is an easy intermediate piano solo w/lyrics. Explores the lovely exotic sound of Mid-eastern music. Lyrics depict Ancient Egypt and scenes along the Nile. Uses broken 5ths in LH accompaniment with syncopation to depict the plodding of camels through the desert, while melodically the RH plays along the upper tetrachord (last 4 notes) of G harmonic minor scale. I included a mordant and turn to mimic the shake of the tambourine used in Ancient Egyptian music. I chose the title because of a song I dearly loved to sing as a child, 'Cruising Down the River', by Beadell and Tollerton. Animals from this region such as hippos and crocodiles are the guides from Noahs Ark. My 'Noah's Ark Series' was created to introduce piano students to different musical styles and to global music. For the student what more fun guides could there be besides animals? Different animals in various locales introduce the student to numerous styles-in this piece, the lovely exotic Mid-eastern music with camels, crocodiles, and hippos in the lyrics being the guides. Try other pieces with lyrics in this series: 'Koala Lullaby' (lullaby); 'Iguana' (tango) 'Sam the Lamb' (Celtic/Strophic); and 'Joey the Wallabee Kangarro' (waltz). This series makes a great recital theme and is contest material.

By Henry Mancini. By Henry Mancini. Arranged by Marcia L McKenna. Jazz. Score. 3 pages. Marcia L. McKenna #5723009. Published by Marcia L. McKenna (A0.948029).

Moon River has been a popular song since 1961. Originally written in 3/4 time by Henry Mancini, with lyrics by Johnny Mercer, this was arranged by Marcia L McKenna in 4/4 time. The dotted rhythm gives it a nice relaxing lilt like gentle waves on a river. The piano part starts quietly, builds up to a climax on the third page, and then tapers off quietly again at the end. The broken chords, descending scale passages, and expression marks enhance the romantic tone of the song. Due to the technical challenges on the third page this is considered to be at the advanced/intermediate level.

The Cape Seashore Seahorses live in the coastal waters of South Africa. They have only been found in a small geographical area, in some rivers and estuaries, and they have a greatly reduced population due to recent floods. These little seahorses are only 5-11 centimeters long. They are actually considered a fish and are related to other fish called sea dragons. The Cape Seashore Seahorses are a mixed green and brown color with dark spots and a short snout. They have a smoothly arched neck and no crown and use their tails to attach themselves to things. They absorb plant vegetation through their snouts and have no stomachs. The Cape Seashore Seahorses have became endangered due to loss of habitat, pollution, and threats to their food sources.
