Mamma Mia was written in the home of Agnetha Fältskog and Björn Ulvaeus, and was the last track recorded for the ABBA album.

The lyrics talk about a woman who is constantly disappointed by her unfaithful partner, but who continues to forgive him anyway.

Its recording took place on March 12, 1975 at Metronome studio and was included on the album as the number #1 track.

Originally, ABBA did not plan to release the song as a single.

Around this time, many artists were recording ABBA songs (such as Honey, Honey and Bang a Boomerang), which led the group to offer Mamma Mia to British band Brotherhood of Man, but it was turned down. However, a promotional video for the song had already been made in April 1975 and was broadcast in Australia. The video sparked interest in the group, and Mamma Mia spent 10 weeks at number one on the Australian charts, encouraging them to release the song as a single.
