This SSAA voicing (scored in barbershop format) is based on the Take 6 version of A Quiet Place as penned by Mervyn Warren. This version takes the well-known and loved 6 part harmonies of Take 6 and condenses it down to 4 part treble voices. Although only half the range of the full mixed voice version of T6, this arrangement encompasses the chord progressions and tight harmonies we've come to know and love. Requires a keen ear for harmony, as there are some very tricky voice leadings.

I first came across this traditional English folk ballad on the podcast mini-series “Dolly Parton’s Americaâ€. Dolly’s version was fast-based and up-beat, but the melody struck me as distant yet clear, mournful yet timeless. When I could not find a version that let the voice further explore these qualities, I made my own. The first exists on my record (WALLFLOWER by Aerhart), the second as a live solo act accompanied by a Yamaha Reface CS Synth, and the third as a Silver Dagger choral arrangement, made with and for the Young New Yorker's Chorus Treble Ensemble. 

The original Silver Dagger tune is a haunting memory in its spirit as much as its history (its many possible origins trace back to the early 1800s). To this day, we wonder whether it’s love, fear or both that sway our overprotected heroine’s decision to “sleep alone all of my life.†Despite her careful consideration, the melody never grants the finality of her decision. This arrangement holds this dissonance within a meditative space - a small moment of stillness in which to let all the big thoughts and emotions come and go. We begin with the memory of the melody, gather momentum and clarity in its pulsing visceral storytelling, then release it, unresolved yet somehow changed.

Think of the story behind this music as about a young lady who  just loves the waltz, and loves to sing and dance to its lilting triple time.  Her dancing partner is a dashing, ever so handsome young man, who sweeps her off her feet and takes her breath away with his charm and grace, as they float away on the wings of A Dance In Triple Time!

I originally composed this piece as a little warm up ditty for my chorus, but as I worked the melody and the harmony, it grew into just a little bit more than a warm up exercise. We always enjoyed singing this little piece for our audiences. And they always enjoyed hearing it.

One caveat; The lyrics go by quickly! Leads, use your best diction and pronunciation, so the story doesn't get lost. Harmony voices, keep the melody prominent, by always singing your la-las at least one dynamic notch below the melody!

The metronome marks more accurately describe the accelerandos and broadenings. On the repeat at 11, a slight increase in the tempo will add urgency and intensity. Keep the melody prominent as it moves to different voices, beginning at 37. Maintain the crisp staccato harmony against the legato melody, and enjoy the change to full legato for all voices.

David Denman Smith's original 1997 TTBB arrangement has been arranged for SSAA voices.  Utilizing traditional harmonies with some new colors, this arrangement takes full advantage of breath of women's voices to provide a new treatment of the Star-Spangled Banner.   The piece works well as a stand alone piece or the audience can stand and sing along.

A TBBB version is available and compatible with this one. You may also use this version with any of the instrumental versions available based on David Denton Smith's original arrangement including violin, cello, and trombone quartets.
