The 1941 classic “Deep in the Heart of Texas†is an American popular song about the state of Texas with lyrics by June Hershey and music by Don Swander. It has been recorded in multiple versions, five of which were on the Billboard charts in 1942. Several university bands in Texas perform the song before football games including the University of Texas Longhorn Band and the Texas Christian University Horned Frog Marching Band, and country music singer and native Texan George Strait has the song played before he takes the stage at concerts. This simple version for SSAA voices and piano was arranged by D. Jason Bishop for the Texas Boys Choir.

This arragement, originally written for and sung by the Blue Phoenix quartet, is designed for a group to have fun featuring its different voice parts taking the melody at times. The beautiful song, similar to its lyrics, was at first rejected by all of the major Austrian record labels before the composers presented it to the Austrian Eurovision team. Performed by Conchita Wurst, it ended up winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 2014, and became a #1 hit in Austria that same year. Like the phoenix bird, it was burned, then rose from the ashes into a viable force to be reckoned with. Since then, it has become a popular song to feature solo/karaoke singers. It now can do the same for your 4-part harmony group. This song was originally written and recorded in 1979 by Robert Hazard, who presented it from a male point of view, but it was made famous by Cyndi Lauper in 1983/4. Lauper tweaked the lyrics to turn it into a celebration of both female pleasure and female autonomy, and in doing so overturned the stereotypes of feminism of the era - becoming the voice of girl power for the generation before the Spice Girls.

Lauper has reworked the song into two subsequent versions, but this arrangement is based firmly on the 1980s version. It was written for a series of one-day workshops, and so was designed to combine musical interest for people spending a whole day singing it with ease of learning to allow participants to focus on performance elements beyond the notes.


The arrangement is notated in the traditional clefs for women's barbershop: treble and bass alta (i.e. sung an octave higher than written).

PERFORMANCE NOTES FROM THE COMPOSER:

I AM is a singing meditation. It is both a piece that honors the individual and the whole. It is meant to affirm an individual's worth, as well as the whole collective. When a choir prepares for a performance, they rehearse a piece dozens if not hundreds of times. I wanted the experience of rehearsing I AM to be an ongoing declaration of the singer’s value. Therefore, every phrase in this piece is an affirmation. When a singer finds themselves singing the piece outside of rehearsal, they will be singing words that are positive and affirming. I cannot express how much joy that brings me as a composer.

Musically, I AM is both complex, with its 7-part vocal split, contrasting rhythms, and varying accents, yet simple in its repetition, lyrics, and tonality. Each of the 7 parts sings a unique affirmation throughout the piece. They are simple statements like, I am enough and I am love, but can hold so much complexity depending on an individual's relationship with the statement. In the middle of the piece, there is an aleatoric section where each singer contributes their unique affirming statement. It creates a chaotic building of sound before coming together for the first and only time in the piece to sing I AM as a whole choir in block chords.  It is one of my favorite moments in the piece because simple and complex are just a beat apart.

I AM was commissioned by the Grand Rapids Women's Chorus and premiered on May 10, 2024.

Written just before the First World War, this flirtatious song anticipates that world where women were finding a new independence and power, and trying to work out what to do with it. On the one hand, the singer doesn’t want to be unfeminine by making the first move, on the other, she’s going to make a bid for what she wants. Go girl, is what I say.

This arrangement is suitable for performance in a barbershop contest, and the Southern Comfort Barber Gals won a bronze medal in the Holland Harmony 2009 chorus contest with this it. From the first series of Sesame Street, this is a deligthfully philosophical song, originally sung by Kermit (indeed, this was Kermit before he really became famous), and covered by the likes of Frank Sinatra and Ray Charles. It covers a major emotional journey from frustration to acceptance in a gentle, thoughtful trajectory. What I find interesting is that by the end of the song, being green has become a wonderful way to be - but it hasn't necessarily become easy. But then, maybe it's better to have a worthwhile way to be than an easy life.

(Tenor, lead, baritone, bass are roughly equivalent to SSAA, although lead and baritone have similar - in this case, identical! - ranges, but perform different functions). A Little Respect was written and recorded by English synth-pop duo Erasure, and is known as one of their signature songs. It reached #4 on the UK singles chart, #14 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and #2 on the US Hot Dance Club Songs chart. This arrangement uses words from the song in place of neutral vowels to create an early ostinato (without boring the harmony parts!) before expanding into homorhythm in verse 2. The melody is mainly in the lead part, with the final motif from the chorus passed to the tenors. In the final verse, a key change moves the melody to the basses and baritones, with the leads taking the final phrase. This arrangement was written for a barbershop chorus, and as such the lowest voice part has a lower range than is custom for choral SSAA writing. However, the range of the entire arrangement is quite narrow, and so it could be sung in a higher tessitura without undo strain on the upper voices. Please note: in keeping with normal barbershop practice the men's barbershop voicing names are used (tenor, lead, baritone and bass) and an octave-shifted bass clef is used for the baritone and bass parts. Vocal ranges are: Tenor: D4 - F5 (D above middle C to F above high C) Lead: G3 - C5 (G below middle C to high C) Baritone: G3 - C5 (G below middle C to high C) Bass: D3 - F4 (D below middle C to F above middle C).

Miley Cyrus's Grammy-winning celebration of emotional independence is re-imagined as a barbershop contest tune, inspired by the Postmodern Jukebox cover version. It starts off in a wistful free waltz-ballad feel, switches up a gear into a steady swing vibe at the first chorus, and escalates again into a faster, clave-driven Latin vibe before subsiding back into a slower tempo for the very end. There is a hint of the initial wistfulness at the start of the tag, but it settles into a sense of gentle resolution: all is now sorted.

Using the words of Christina Rossetti's delightful poem of the same name, this is an unaccompanied choral piece for female voices (SSAA with some divisi).  It begins 'My heart is like a singing bird whose nest is in a watered shoot' and as the voices weave together, a series of beautiful imagery is presented including apple trees, rainbow shells, peacocks, silver fleur de lys, a halcyon sea, and a dais of silk and down. Towards the end it breaks out into a joyful 'Happy Birthday' waltz, before the final climax 'The Birthday of my life!.

This song was Nat King Cole's first major vocal hit. It is based on a folk tale his father used to use in his sermons, in which a buzzard takes various animals for a ride before throwing them to the ground and eating them for dinner. A monkey observes this, and goes for a ride, but surprises the buzzard wrapping his tail round the bird's neck and refusing to be thrown off.

The song's rhythmic feel is both cool and dry. The laid-back swing feel gives a sense of authority in the way the monkey takes control of the situation, but the syncopations and chromatic licks also remind us that in folk tales, the monkey is the trickster, even when he's on the side of the righteous. The arrangement is designed to be suitable for barbershop contests (BHS system).
